Don't forget that the league is profit sharing. So individual profits don't matter.
- Retinalz

Umm that's not how profit sharing works. If you contribute the most to the pot you are more valuable than the team that contributes the least. A Hamilton or Mississauga team would instantly be a massive addition to every owner profiting. They'd be top5 within a year or two.

I remember reading an article about it being in the league bylaws, the arena has to be a certain distance away from another NHL one or else the existing team has to sign off on it.

that seems super crazy to me!

The Leafs have a long-standing agreement i think100 mile radius. It is wht Kitchener-Waterloo was considered by Balsillie and yeas Devils i believe paid a fee to Rangers, so did Islanders
- Reubenkincade

Huh, that is super bizarre and interesting. MAkes sense to a certain extent but 100kms?! That's pretty crazy. This info all makes me hate the Leaves that much more.

Just read the CA post, because of age they waited until afternoon the trade deadline so that his contract doesnt start until next year, AND, if he returns to the WHL it does slide.

JB is not stupid,

- 1970vintage

JB didn't write the contract he just signed it.

Yeah, that’s how I read it. Can be assigned to the AHL or play an overage year in WHL.

Well yes, obviously, but let’s not get our hopes up just yet. Cassels did win a Memorial Cup and then...

All leafs nation, all the time.
Was fun when Ottawa came in and started to compete for attention...unfortunate the Sens have become a slow motion disaster.

When your the top money making sports franchise in the NHL, I think you can make some room for the benefit of the league.

It’s about more than just ticket sales. Viewership, merchandise, etc.

I’m assuming the majority of hockey fans in Hamilton are currently Leaf fans.

The rule is put in place to protect owners from losing a big chunk of revenue

Why would an owner cut his own profits to help someone else?

I could maybe see teams agreeing to it if it’s an expansion team since everyone gets a chunk of the expansion fees. But I highly doubt Toronto’s ownership would be happy with Arizona or Florida moving to Hamilton.

I would think that the league's interest would trump that of MLSE or even that they would start their own second franchise, or make a side deal for portion of profits. Or any number of things they did in the other major cities to make it happen.

That 2016 UFA Group

Lucic
Ladd
Eriksson

nothing good ever comes from UFA signings of 30+ year olds to long term deals.

I'm sure Bettman would make it worth their while. But I'm just saying that I don't think MLSE would do it out of the kindness of their hearts.

They do get some smaller benefits out of it as well, a new rivalry, basically zero travel for the "road games" in Hamilton, etc.

I still think that should have it's limits. 50 km's seems reasonable. Extending that to a city that wasn't even considered to be in the GTA until recently (Hamilton) and is 70 km's out of town. Seems above and beyond what the intent of the rule is they're greedy (frank)ing pigs.

Except the many, many UFA signings of 30+ guys that have workeed out well. But ya that year was a dud!
