That was (frank)ing dirty by the team putting that video together like that.
- Lindenis#1

he's worth 2 tops. hasn't proved he is worth anything but a qualifying offer.
- storm88

Gudbranson didn't prove he was worth a single cent more than he was already making, and if anything proved he deserved less.

But pedigree and UFA years cost money. Baertschi might be the best defensive winger on the team too. He doesn't get enough credit for holding Horvat's defensive game together as a unit.

blackhawks surprisingly don't have a great draft record

The game changes. Back in 2008 to 2012 Big and tough was the way to go.

Considering the misses and mistakes that have been made over the decades you'd think a half decent draft team could make out like a bandit at the draft regardless of their position.
- bloatedmosquito

Put it this way:

it'd be hard not to have a top prospect pool after drafting top 6 during 3 out of the last 4 years.

Soon to be 4 out of the last 5 years.

Even a GM who sat on his hands and made zero trades would fall ass backward into a solid prospect pool in those circumstances.

In the last 10 years only 3 "heavy" teams have won the cup, and they also happened to have buckets of elite skill on their roster too.

Sure, that's why it's even more ridiculous in 2018 to draft a guy top 10 over a guy who's projected to score more points.

Draft another Gadjovich in the 2nd or 3rd round if you want. But don't draft Virtanen over Ehlers or Crouse over Barzal

A simple bump would have disrupted the pass. No need for a hook in that situation. So lazy.

this thinking lead to Virtanen over Ehlers/Nylander lol and would have lead to Beach over Hodgson if Gillis didn't overrule his dumbass scouts lol.
- Nucker101

I wish we had Ehlers. Nylander would be nice, but I also don't think he would be as good on this team as he is riding shotgun with Matthews.

Oh god I totally forgot Lawson Crouse existed.

Remember the hubbub about him being a top 5 pick because of the cliche machine?

Dude couldn't hang for poop in the NHL.

And drafting "role" players in later rounds is how you get Edmonton. Go look at all the picks they made in rounds 2-7 through the decade of darkness and get an abacus to keep track of all the Coke Machines they took in the 2nd round.

Didn't the Province or PITB do a mock canuck draft over the past 20 years and they got a receptionist to just pick the highest scouted/ranked prospect available. And she ended up with a better draft record (more NHL games played or something).

It was quite a statement on how bad our drafting has been. If I was an owner I would just fire the entire scouting staff and just go off the major scouting reports. Save some money anyway.

CanucksArmy redid the Canucks draft record twice. Once using the highest CSS ranked player available each time, and the other time going solely off CHL PPG. Both times yielded top prospect pools.

Obviously theres the butterfly effect unaccounted for, but I think the point stands.

How Delorme hung onto his job as long as he did is a testament to the "Good Old Boy" side of the NHL clubhouse. Brackett might be the best hire Gillis ever made.

If the Canucks had never traded Cam Neely would he still have achieved the same career numbers?

Seriously, this is actually an understatement.

Edmonton is a great example of why you don't draft "role" players who aren't even top players on their junior teams and then somehow expect them to play a similar role in a way better league lol. Might as well just trade your picks if you're gonna waste them like that.
