So if Tavares was traded at the deadline... he couldn't sign an 8 year deal with his new team? Same for any rentals at the deadline? (Since the deadline was after march 1st).

you have to be on the roster at end of day on the TDL day for that team team to offer you an 8 year deal. i didn't bother to go back and check the exact date.
