Everyone talks about goaltending but negates to mention the sticks players used, skates, conditioning, training, etc. etc. It works both ways! The guys who scored were fantastic players in their time.
Maurice Richard was also one of the best scorers in NHL history, the first man to ever score 50 in 50, with a piece of lumber with no curve and was glued together. - LeftCoaster
That line of thinking only works if goal scoring didn't dramatically decrease like it has. Yes forwards, equipment, conditioning is better but the impact of those things is exponentially more impactful on the goalies side. Coaching also has played a huge role in helping goalies, hurting shooters.
Nothing against the greats of different era's but scoring 50 today means a hell of a lot more than it did 20, 30, 50 years ago. |

Beat me to it. The biggest, by far, change in the game is how good goalies have gotten. It's not even close. You watch that old tape and it's laughable. Markstrom would have been a top 5 goalie in the 80's. |

The only reason Demko is he is the only one who could possible stop the "ROAR TO THE FLOOR" (Tm (c) Beatle_john 2018)
Remember folks "ROAR TO THE FLOOR"..... is just not tanking anymore.

They have more pressing issues on the OL, RB. They also want to re-sign Sheldon Richardson. Cap issues. I thinks RW3 will burn Sherman next year a few times. - VanHockeyGuy
I think they’ll be fighting for 2nd behind the Rams. Rams will likely regress a bit offensively though, their efficiency was pretty crazy.
I’m high on Jimmy G, but that Niners roster still has plenty of weaknesses |

Oh for sure but regardless of being era specific which is a huge debate when it comes to comparing the greatest players of all time...even Gretzky didn't accomplish that (8 - 50+ goal seasons in a row) which to me makes Bossy's achievement superbly unreal...in any era. - LordHumungous

I think they are looking at another 2-3 seasons of no playoffs. Too many holes now on O line, RB, D injury issues and so forth.
7-9 next season. No playoffs. - LordHumungous
Maybe the next year after though, it really is intractable how quickly you can turn it around in the NFL. It's just a different beast that league. |

I'm hoping that's true. Russell is just too bloody good to be out of the playoffs IMO...but they need to get him some help quick. |

Yeah seriously. My dad was a goalie and he said the most instruction he ever got in the 70s/80s was "stop the puck". There was no coaching and the most you'd get is watching other guys and just trying to mimmick them.
I've played with goalies who would see three specialized coaches in a week to work on video/flexibility/technique etc.
Mix in that they use space grade materials in the pads now so they aren't just horsehair and leather that weighs 40lbs a leg makes a big deal too.
Patrick Roy, more or less, invented the butterfly and you can basically see goal scoring drop dramatically once that next wave of goalies in came in playing it forcing all the old guys to learn it too.
Scoring 50 when a team good only scores 260 goals in a year is (frank)ing insanity. |

They have a stud to build around but sadly need every position on the o side of the ball, with Graham and robinson out. RB,WR, G,T,TE all needs and a couple holes on the other side of the ball now. That's why you don't let those guys walk IMO. |

Plus Earl Thomas is oft-injured now. But again I do get why they let Bennett and Sherman walk. Locker room issues with Bennett and Achilles issues with Sherman. Risky keeping them on both counts. But you are correct they need massive help on the O side of things...still a pretty damn good D there even without Sherman. |

I'm really missing the "Actually, trading for others teams expendable prospects is a great idea to build a winner" people.
They're the same ones that were "Baertschi and Granlund are amazing (frank)ing trades. Those guys rules and Benning is a genius for pulling those off" but are now "Thank goodness Benning robbed Motte and Leipsic from other teams. Allows us to move on from Baertschi and Granlund, neither of which are any good and were only necessary because Gillis gave Hamhuis an NTC." |

The Achilles thing is weird to me. Just about everyone under the sun comes back at 100% and many guys and doctors say they're stronger for it as it essentially prevents the injury from happening ever again. |

I put a reminder in my calendar for next February to do a capfriendly search on 21-23 yr old players on expiring ELCs who are less than 20 games from requiring waivers.
Gonna get rich on next years trade deadline. |
