Maverick I understand what your saying, but even the Coyotes have some talent. The problem is if you don't have the combination of committed ownership, scouting, and good hockey management, then your going to have 1 foot forward 1 food back.
Melnyk f'ed this team last winter - which was supposed to be on a historic time for both the country and franchise.
It isn't just Karlsson that needs a new contract - it's Stone, it's Duchene, it's hoffman and no goalies the following summer.
The team needs (a) a top 5 pick; likely top 3 (b) resign Karlsson or trade him for star power / impact players coming back, or you give him 80+m (c) move out salaries / buyout Gaborik which will be about 1.2 per year - AlfieisKing
Yes I agree, every team has talent, all i'm saying is that Ottawa currently has enough talent to make something happen.
I 100% agree problem is ownership |

By "make something happen" I mean make the playoffs and hopefully win a round or two.
With the top two lines of...
Hoffman - Duchene - Ryan
Dzlinge - White - Stone
Harpur - Karlsson
Chabot - Dahlin
I absolutely think there is enough talent there to make the playoffs next year. But we need a more offensive system. Keep in mind it took Brassard a while to get any chemistry here too. Duchene wasn't great at first but look at him and Hoffman go now. |

3 of those guys have a bigger possibility of not being there than actually being there.
Sens are screwed if they have Ceci and Chabot as their 2 best Dmen and one line in Stone, Hoffman Duchene....if they dont screw up the Stone RFA contract.
Legit, Sens are going to go in a very very dark place if this offseason doesnt go 100% their way in salvaging a karlsson relationship and how the lottery balls land /
They easily can be
Hoffman Duchene Stone
Dzlinge White ?
Chabot Ceci
? ?
That team will get murdered

Keep in mind that trading Karlsson and Ryan saves a bunch of cap space and is going to bring back massive return.
Granted I agree, I think saving the Karlsson relationship and signing him to an extension is the best outcome. No one can discount what the return would be. |

Part of the problem with that thinking is that most of the best players in the league have no-trade clauses. Do you think anyone waives for Ottawa? The really good young. inexpensive talent without a no-trade doesn't get traded unless it is for the same. |

I still think the best option is to resign him
I agree with the ntc. however, if the deal isn't well in favor of the Sens. There is no way they make a deal and they focus on signing him |

Wake up Maverick1818! Melnyk doesnt have the money to pay Karlsson 10 M$ or more by year on a long-term contract. Karlsson won't take a discount to stay in Ottawa neither. He's the best defenseman in the NHL and he will want to be paid like an All-Star. You're so delusional dude, its sad. |

you will get a haul from EK, but I think its a bit presumptuous to assume you will get any impact players from it (I know you didn't say that but teams aren't giving up Top 6 fwds and Top 4 dmen who will take a run at him)
Realistically you will get a bunch of young players, maybe 1st 2nd year guys with picks and prospects. With that depth there will be a lot of growing pains if you are filling out 3/4 of that roster with prospects learning how to be NHL pros and already signed roster fillers like Zach Smiths, Burrows, Pyatts, GaborĂk etc.
Dont see a huge trade market for these guys and Ott has never been the one to put NHL money down in the AHL to great roster spots nor will the be buying them out.
With 11 fwds, 4 Dmen, and 2 goalies already signed for next year....thats going to be a big tear down and I dont see a market for the vast majority of the guys besides that top line and Chabot |
