I get their rationale. There's a contract and a CBA to adhere to though. I'm presuming this is all above board and the NFL is fine with it, but if the Sabres just wrote Jack a million dollar check for coming close to his bonus last year, they'd have gotten killed by the league.

I don't really feel like looking either. I think injury settlements are just an NFL thing though.

I'm a bit surprised they are allowed to pay out unearned bonuses.

They just restructured his deal to pay him an extra $200,019 the extra $19 was for the 19 yards short he was which he almost certainly would've got if he had played.

I'm almost positive they're an NHL thing too, but because of guaranteed contracts(why would a player take a settlement if they can just get their entire salary anyway?) they're pretty rare.

But I don't know if it would be considered circumvention if they're doing it to avoid recapture penalties, I would assume it would. Savard/Hossa'ing him would be the easiest thing to do for everyone if it came to it.
