Even though u don’t post about Corsi stats anymore bc everyone rips u for it...
i know you’re a big proponent of “possession”
Winning the faceoff gives you possession
Does it not?
Also...
pretty damn hard to score if u don’t have the puck
It’s not rocket science - jdfitz77
No. Not clear possession. Not all the time.
Situations can make them important.
Being good at them does nothing in the win column long term. That’s not a debate it’s a fact |

I think there are number instances where faceoffs are lost and the team gains possession. It's more of a team thing - Sabresfan-365
Of course that happens...
but that’s not the norm |

i dunno, strictly based on the eye test it looks pretty even. There are also a number of cases where the team wins the faceoff but can't do anything with it. |

he got the secondary on Benoit's goal but that pass was primary and a half.
Edit: oh you meant the last one lol, I thought they were going unassisted cause it bounced around the crease so much |

Winning a d zone faceoff 5 on 5 leads to bad clearing attempts, turnovers etc.
I think Fitz is under this assumption that I’ve made up this opinion strictly to bash O’Reilly, and not because I read articles on this 3-4 years ago |

all ill say with ROR is that if the first thing people bring up about you is your faceoff abilities, you're probably not worth 7.5 mil |

Well obviously u need to be good at a bunch of other factors as well to win consistently
Faceoffs are just ONE thing that HELPS
You could be a team who’s got great Corsi numbers, but isn’t a very good team bc their goaltending blows
What u do with faceoffs...
u can also do with any stat really
Bc there isn’t ONE thing that directly correlates to winning & losing (except scoring) |

Yeah except scoring chances, shots, shot suppression is infinitely more important than faceoffs.
That’s the point |

Of course
Bit would u rather be the team with the puck trying to score...
or the team CHASING the puck trying to get possession?
Seems obvious to me

Right but say ROR does that for you 6/10 times, a different guy does that what 5 out of 10 times?
If the difference was 9/10 vs 1/10 then it'd have a major impact. |

Jared Stoll. Great at faceoffs. Awful possession player. Hmm...
http://www.thehockeynews....-as-theyre-made-out-to-be
“Take Jarret Stoll for example. The 33-year-old was claimed off waivers on Monday by the Minnesota Wild, much to the confusion of the analytics community. But the claim was lauded by many hockey pundits because Stoll is a guy with experience that can win faceoffs. And they’re right about that. He was on a Kings team that won two Stanley Cups and is tied for seventh in faceoff percentage with Paul Stastny at 57.9 percent among players who’ve taken 100 or more faceoffs this year. He’s also been a 55 percent guy for most of his career. The problem is that Stoll has been one of the league’s worst possession players this season. With Stoll on the ice the Rangers get just 40 percent of the shot attempts which is 9.5 percent worse than when he’s on the bench. That’s the 11th worst mark in the league among players who’ve played 20 or more games. ” |
