This is closer to the story I heard as well...slightly different in that supposedly they had a deal identified with the Jags I believe and then the Jags backed out at the last minute.

where i live (Fort Wayne) used to have a mayor named Harry Baals.. they were moving the government to a new building and were asking the public for input on names.. almost got called the Harry Baals Center.. i believe it made national news at the time

This is exactly what Beane did. He also said something along the lines of "if I think about throwing big money at one of these FA QBs, jump me."

He did research on ALL the qbs. He found one with a small market that made sense financially and a roster fit for the Bills. And he spoke about the research he did on that particular QB. You can bet your ass he did research on almost every one.
