I've been saying for two seasons that at this point, i'd be far more interested if they changed it to a political drama about rebuilding society with a zombie b-plot, than the rinse/cycle/repeat bad guy formula

Don't just get the biggest one, how far away are you going to sit from it? A bigger TV too close will look like poop because it's designed to be viewed from farther away.

I remember playing 4-way, split-screen Halo 2 on a 13" tv/vcr combo as a teenager

Depends what level of TV he is buying.... if he is spending money nothing will beat the LG. But i also doubt he is spending 4-5k. So i am guessing he is getting a "cheaper" version and they are all pretty much the same at the 900-1500 level.

I have a 55" and I sit about 7' away when gaming and it's bordering on too big, but the TV I have(Samsung) went from 42" up to 55" and I wasn't going to go backward in size.

Anything more than 32” for gaming shooters is a waste. There’s a reason the esports players are on 27” gaming monitors. You see everything quicker.
