No to the slide-whistle.

Henrik's comments after the game got me thinking about coaching schemes and deployment.

"I was surprised how fast they played,” Sedin said. “They have five guys taking off as soon as they get the puck. And they make plays. Even when you play in their end, you battle and battle and battle. And when you give the puck away, a lot of teams would just chip it out and change. But they keep coming at you, and then you have to backcheck and all of a sudden you’re tired in your end. That’s how they scored their fourth goal tonight. That’s how they score a lot of goals.”

That doesn't sound like that's skill driven. That sounds like playbook and player personality getting it done. Just like to see that kind of play from our team. And it doesn't take skill to play that way.

The Canucks haven't played fast since like the 2012 TDL when all of a sudden you heard "blah blah gotta win games 2-1 blah" out of nowhere. They started going a little bit more ham and potatoes under AV but their transition game has been non existent since Torts took over and has hardly recovered since.

The 2011 team was ahead of their time. They’d be even more dominant today.

For sure, but it’s also speed driven. Canucks have a decent amount of mediocre skaters, even outside of the Sedins

Meh, they aren't the slowest team either. I don't see them attacking. Just seem so cautious through the neutral zone. Their transition game plan hasn't improved at all. As Vantel mentioned it's regressed away from that attacking style.

Nothing kills transition with speed like the drop-pass.

Fair point. I'd also like to see more skill and speed. We are very lacking in both, no positional depth of any kind.

I assume Green wanted to play a more safe/defensive style when he realized his roster was dog poop, especially after the injuries to key guys.

WD started with similar praise here during his first season

I agree. I think AV was the last true offensive coach we had. I can still hear him yelling at the players as they gained control to "move! move! move!"

AV (and all coaches for that matter) go to the shutdown game plan when their jobs are in jeopardy.

You may not know off the top of your head when Henrik last scored at Rogers Arena, but I guarantee you'll remember the goal.

That's about the most intriguing tidbit I can preview to send you over to today's new blog:

Why the (frank) would he do that? So you lose games 3-0 instead of 6-4? At this point, who gives a poop.

Do they think fan apathy could get worse with a different game plan?

I’m guessing in his mind he wants less total goal per game(both teams combined) so there’s more luck involved. He’s hoping for 2-1 or 2-2 games.

I’m not saying I agree with him, but I believe that’s what a lot of coach’s with bad/depleted rosters resort to. They don’t want to trade chances with more talented teams. They want to try and frustrate them.

Its a complete 180 from something he said earlier this year where, paraphrasing obviously, but "its better to lose fun than lose boring"

Like you'd think the team underwent a coaching change around Christmas

That's the whole reason the NHL is so boring. Can't let the stars be stars or the bad teams will be really bad. Let the plugs hook and hold, stop calling the rulebook by game 40 and forget what a rule is come the playoffs.

Complete opposite of the NBA and NFL

I think the change in style took place after the Bo injury and it’s been that way since
