Nothing to do with playing it safe. Had to do with trying to find a way to slow down the Fast line who was killing them all game. - MJL
I thought it was. The Flyers have a tendency to play "prevent" in third periods when nursing a lead. Frequently it fails. Last night it didn't. |

Exactly. If the guy gets you 2 goals and is creating the most offensive pressure, you keep going with him. Live by the sword, die by the sword. |

I agree that he's not the first coach to ever do that. Still doesn't make it a good idea, kind of like the prevent defense in football.
This team doesn't have the team-wide defense required to shutdown a team for a full period playing back on their heels (well, maybe Buffalo). Their best bet is to keep their foot on the pedal and keep playing the way that got them the lead. Do you maybe not try a high-risk/high-reward play that you try in the first? Sure. But to just let the other team continually come at you is not a recipe for winning. - jmatchett383
I agree, I don’t like the message Hak sends with the prevent d, we have seen it work and not work but always it is helter skelter. On this occasion I am not sure he had a choice, Rags # 1 line was killing the flyers. I am not sure if Hak could have found a better match up, make an in game adjustment but that line has been flying. Hak is dealing with a team with a confidence issue

That had a lot to do with Alex Lyon than the team or system, though. He was under heavy fire and played really, really well. |

It was horrible to me because the only real push we had in the last 5 minutes was largely created by tk. Than he got benched for the rest the game. I just hate the play to not lose mentality. - Tfaehner

with this team their best defense is their offense cause their team defense is a tad frightening - nastyflyergirl
With a better 3rd pair dman combo and 3rd line the team defense would loom a lot different. Gudas is keeping the seat warm for Myers right now. Hopefully he can stay healthy and have a strong AHL playoff run. Gudas even looks a little slower now and a bit more indecisive now, a bad combo.

I'm sure that if Konecny played a regular shift the entire game, and he made a blunder that resulted in a Rangers goal, some on this board would be all over Hakstol for playing him in such a crucial situation. - Scoob
No. It would be fear of Hakstol healthy scratching Konecny for the next game. |

If that line is flying, then you fight fire with fire. Konecny was creating the most offensive pressure, so you put him out there and you punch them harder than they punch you. If you can't stop them, then you don't let them stop you, either. The Read swap didn't really seem to have any effect on that line creating havoc. |

Gudas brings nothing right now. I don't know if the coaches talked to him or he's fearful of another suspension or what, but he's lost all semblance of an edge, he doesn't defend well, he's passive, and his puck skills were never a strong suit to begin with.
I'd be totally fine if Brandon Manning never wore a Flyers jersey again, but at the same time...he's better than Gudas right now. |

I also give young players some slack when they make mistakes. Now if a player makes the same mistake over and over without correcting then sure, he needs to take a seat. I don't think that is the case with TK. He seems to have corrected a lot of what got him benched last year. On the goal, and correct me if I am wrong, but it looked as tho he stepped up to intercept the puck and he missed it or it went over his stick. unfortunate. |

If you want to shorten the bench, Read should be replacing Weal, not TK.

He did, that's why he threw his head up. It looked like it skipped over his stick and off went Zibanejad. |

I agree, I said the same thing to MJL, I like read but he didn’t stop the Rags from all out zone time. I don’t like the message it sends, kind of makes it seem the players and coach have a confidence issue but we are not in the locker room |

Gudas gets a lot of leeway because he is the only RH dman on the roster. My concern is he has had knee issues in the past and he was never fast to begin with. If he is thinking too much and physically slowing down, yikes |

So because its more important to stay ahead of NJ and to a letter extent, Florida, than it is to catch the penguins or Columbus i guess its better to see the Pens beat NJ. Honestly I think the best match up is Washington (not that beating them would be easy) than playing Tampa, Pitts or Columbus. I don't think anyone wants Columbus right now. - nastyflyergirl
Gawd. It leaves such a bad taste, doesn't it? On facebook, I just told a friend from Pittsburgh (At least, I think he is a friend, but I guess one of those Russian facebook bots could have taken over his account. He likes Malkin and has a Russian wife.) that I was "hoping the Pens would win against NJ". I clarified it and made sure he new I was just hoping and in no way actively rooting for the Pens (or NJ for that matter). |

Anthony SanFilippo goes in depth on the Konecny benching, and addresses some other points of interest from yesterday's game.

Brandon Manning was back in the lineup last night… and while he didn’t make any egregious mistakes that cost the Flyers, there was still a lot of “Oh, Brandon” moments. Whether it was being caught out of position, colliding with teammates behind the net, or stumbling to the ice on his own, Manning continues to be what he is – a No. 7 defenseman. I don’t buy that he’s a better matchup for specific teams than Robert Hagg at the moment, as Hakstol indicated. Instead, I can tell you there is a very real belief that Hagg is still injured, and that despite trying to play through it in recent games, Hagg isn’t quite 100 percent – which is why Manning was back in the lineup against New York. |
