20yr old Jr...no thx
Waste of a contract

- Nighthawk

Ya. We are loaded with top-notch prospects that are guaranteed too be nhl'ers, wtf was I thinking.🤔
We need those contract spots to resign career AHL'ers like Boucher.

Sign any good UFA whenever you can if the price is liveable & can fit into the cap management plan.

Thats the kicker I am referring to. Good teams can usually attract UFA's for under market value. Vancouver did it when they were good, Penguins, Blackhawks, etc.

Then look at the bad deals signed in the past decade and they are usually mediocre teams trying to compensate and push themselves over the edge. See Toronto-Clarkson, Buffalo-Ehrhoff/Leino, etc.

The kicker is all about how far to go.
Its not mandatory but worth the try.

Sign the stop gap role players after July 3 when the spending frenzy is over and guys are now looking for jobs. No point on adding elite talent at this stage. Like Reuby said, let the team grow together.

It's not a kicker, though. The Canucks are at the draft & develop stage. Hopefully, in a few years with more young talent being added, the team will start being competitive (for real and not just Benning blathering on about nothing) then you can start looking at UFA's to take the team to the next level.

I mean, they can kick tires on everyone but they know they wont be able to sign anyone to reasonable deals. This team is still too far away from contending for a playoff spot, let alone a cup, and the UFA's arent signing long term deals only to have the team be good after they retire

I hear ya.
I don't want to over pay in price/term/no trade clauses.
But i don't think we need to have a blanket no UFA rule just cuz the team sucks.

I agree, we likely won't be attracting any top tier players (although i'm gonna hold out hope for Kane until he signs with another club), but if you can convince someone to sign in Van, i say go for it.

Enter pres/cup and his 20m/1 year deal for Erik Karlson.

Komarov Reaves and Descharnais work as stop gaps.

The hometown effect is a wildcard in negotiations, so its plausible Kane may take a discount to sign here, but I doubt it. He knows the Vancouver market well enough, he knows the tax bracket here, and he has spent the last several seasons losing in Buffalo. I bet he stays in California or goes to an income tax-free state

Agreed on not having a blanket ban on UFA's, but cant be desperate and overpay to sign guys

After a quick look at capfriendly for younger UFA's.

Derek Grant, Brian Gibbons and Riley Nash would be worth a look (although i imagine most will be re-upped).

Old Kevin Connauton seems to having a decent year in the desert as well.

Good fodder to trade by the brain trust👍
- Nighthawk

What is good fodder about turning a first round pick into 2 years service for a trade?

How about drafting players that turn out staying 7 -8 years instead?

No one is suggesting a blanket no UFA rules, just no point in adding top end talent at a high price for term. Wait for the dust to settle and sign a few guys who can help now and then hopefully be traded at the deadline.
