The hit wasn't that bad it's getting overblown I've seen worse
- gerbe75pts

Sabres D Victor Antipin has been diagnosed with a concussion following a hit from last night’s game against Nashville. Antipin also suffered facial lacerations, a broken nose and dental injuries. He will be out indefinitely. Antipin will travel with the team from Nashville today.

what part of that report "wasn't that bad" and is "getting overblown"?

Do you think the hit would be perceived differently if it happened to Jack instead of Antipin?
- PrinceChill

Should it be? No. Would it be? Yes.
Ive never been a proponent of judging a dirty play on an injury that happened because of it. Watch the play and decide. The injury shouldnt make a difference in the punishment if you ask me.
Another way of looking at it, if a guy gets injured should we always expect a dps review? I dont think so. Injuries can come from incidental contact just as often as on dirty plays.

He did see hartnell coming and turned his back on him. If he doesnt turn his back and stands his ground maybe its hartnell that gets injured. Would him standing his ground then be considered "bad" if it went the other way? Hits like that happen every game, it was more unfortunate than anything imo.

I saw a player facing the boards about a foot away from them...I saw a checker come in an use a well placed forearm that hit said player in the middle of his back with enough force to cause his head to snap back and the consequent whiplash to cause his face to smash against the glass with brute force...

after that...

said player dropped to the ice and lay there motionless

All of that happened after said player saw a check coming and turned his back on it. Its just a tough spot i think.

Was an unfortunate outcome of the hit which seemed like a every day check play .

disagree...look at the replay...

Antipin was skating backwards with his upper body at about a 30 degree angle from the back wall...he maintained that angle when hartnell came in and lowered the boom...if you watch antipin's head on the play he's looking as far right as his head will allow and that position doesn't move until hartnell puts his forearm into antipin's back the force of which causes antipin's head to turn towards the glass before smashing into it

Just watched it a few more times. I guess we just see it differently. Heres the way i see it: if instead of turning to pass it backwards around the boards had he shoved it around the other way, lowered his shoulder and hit hartnell as he was coming in for the hit, maybe hartnell is the one being carried off on a stretcher. I wouldnt think that was dirty either. Turning your back to a check is never a good idea if you ask me.

Honest question: what is the point of Hartnell hitting him there?

Because he can by rule even though the puck is already gone and he could have done a drive by and not touched him? To hope that the hit causes him to cough up the puck later on another play? To make it seem like Hartnell isn't useless due to not getting to Antipin when he did have the puck?

he didn't turn his back on anything...it was already at that angle...antipin was in a vulnerable position with the way he was playing the puck...

Hartnell's the culprit on the play and his it was his follow through that caused the whiplash...it was a bad hit

Do you think Hartnell deserved a penalty on the play?

No i dont. poop happens, ive seen way cheaper hits result in far less. Ive seen way more benign plays result in more. It was happenstance imo. He could have hit him a lot harder if he wanted to.

Probably did, but that has no bearing on the play. When he turned, Hartnell had time to stop and bail, not drive his forearm hard and smash him into the boards while staring at his number.

This is the same Hartnell that regularly goes up to and crosses the line, this is one of the dirtiest players in the league.

Sorry, I just saw that play way differently. Right when the hit occurred I was like, there's a major. Pretty sure I posted that last night.

That's how I saw it as well.

Instead, Hartnell 'finished his check' needlessly to make himself not look useless on the play.

I think if he kept his arm down, I'd be more in line with Hank and the others saying it was a hockey play, I could see that. Two minute minor and we'd be done.

It was driving his forearm high and burying him into the glass.

That's really where I had the problem.

I think it definitely had a bearing on the play. If a player just has to turn around and not protect himself to avoid getting hit, there would be no hitting in hockey.
