A full season with a healthy Sekera, a league average or better season from Talbot, and Lucic not having easily the worst season of his career and this season is much different. Oilers likely fighting for a wild card spot. Expect them to look for a winger or 2 and an upgrade on d in the off-season. They'll hope Talbot regains last season's form. If he doesn't, it's a contract year and they let him walk and seek his replacement next offseason.

I'm not sure I am as confident as you. Last year seems to be more of a blip, but the trade of Eberle I think hurt them a lot as well.

I really would like to see Edmonton in the playoffs. McDavid out of the playoffs just seems wrong.

If it was me, I'd trade Klefbom out of the 2 of them.
If for nothing else, than we saw how stellar Sekera has been since coming back , so who knows if next season Klefbom isn't just Sekera v2.0 in his return as well

I'd also probably lean towards trading Klefbom for two reasons: the consideration of his consistent injury history and the fact that he's valued more highly around the league. His perceived value would mean less of an add-on in order to get the kind of upgrade we need and preserving assets is priority for me. There's hesitation for me, but Nurse has proven capable of running an effective shutdown pairing or driving positive results on a 2nd pairing this year and likely still has some ceiling to reach being two years younger than Klefbom.

If we can add a true upgrade on Klefbom (I'm talking OEL or Karlsson-type), and we reinforce our prospect system with a guy like Bouchard or Dobson, we're looking at a deep pool of Dmen. A couple years down the road, we could be looking at a top of the league D corps like:

OEL- Dobson
Nurse- Larsson
Jones- Benning
Bear

With a smattering of cheaper ~22 year old prospects bubbling under in the AHL (like Tampa and Nashville) in Lagesson, Berglund, Samorukov, Mantha and Marino and any others they choose to draft along the way. Forwards can be reinforced with smart depth picks and our 1sts in the following years (2019 and 2020).

We should honestly follow the model Boston has done to turn themselves back around and out of cap trouble by getting our D picked early in our retool (like 1st on Zboril, 2nd on Carlo and another 1st on McAvoy) so they're peaking at the same time as any forwards picked in following years. We ought to learn from our franchise's mistake in the early years of the decade(+) of futility.
