Karlsson is not the defenseman we should be targeting. He gonna demand too much money on an extension and is a defensive liability. No thanks. - wreckage
I disagree.
If there is any defender that I would consider trading Klefbom for in an upgrade (which would require resigning the player to big money in a guaranteed extension), it's him. 10m per for 6-7 years for him is a no-brainer from my point of view and he would be worth every single penny. Plus, considering the situation, it makes sense with regards to what each team would want (upgrade in defense for us, and a cheap, young top 2 (possibly) defender for Ottawa).
And I HIGHLY disagree with your statement of him as a defensive liability. He has greatly improved his defensive game over the years. In fact, I'd say he is underrated defensively at this point.

100% agreed with the bold and kind of why I stated how he could be THE piece involved in a trade for Karlsson. That contract would make Melnyk jizz his pants. And honestly, I think it would be ideal for both teams. Our defense becomes that much better and I'm certain even Iggy would say that we finally have a true #1 RD that can help lead this team. Ottawa gets a young defender that might be a top 2 on one hell of a cheap contract. It's the perfect deal that involves Klefbom IMO. The parameters make everything click.
Still think it would cost less than Klefbom/1st/prospect. Don't underestimate that poopty situation Ottawa is in. Wouldn't be surprised if it is a straight up deal (as I said, Melnyk would jizz his pants for such a contract), but wouldn't be surprised if we do add something, though not as much as you suggested. Perhaps this year's 2nd (could be seen as a low-end first) could be enough. Melnyk is a poopbag of an owner. A disgrace. All he cares about is profit, profit, profit. Ran Alfie out of town and Turris too. Time is ticking in Ottawa and everybody knows it.
But damn... Karlsson/McDavid/LD leading this team and the possibilities as you mentioned.... Time will tell. First, we'll need competent management to even handle such a transaction.
Solid depth of youth will be fundamental for this team gonig forward, but like yo usaid, it can be done.
As for defense, sekera would be the X-factor with regards to your defensive lines going into next year. If it's the old Sekera that finally shows up, we should be more than fine, depth wise. Regardless, he WILL be gone once Karlsson's extension kicks in.
And you mean
_____-Karlsson

Dude, you aren’t getting Erik karlsson for Oscar Klefbom straight up.
Even Klefbom of the previous season can’t hold his jock.
Klefbom has a bunch of great attributes. Great contract, young enough to potentially develop further and put up significant numbers(maybe 45ish), has shown he can handle some Bigger minutes, big shot etc.
But he’s still got holes and is a question mark
While Erik karlsson is one of the best offensive dmen to ever play. Dude scores at like a ppg pace as a dman. It’s crazy. Over the next half decade, He could even take a a step back from his scoring pace of star first line forward, and he’d still be a first ballot hall of famer
They’ll get a ton for him. Klefbom alone isn’t even close really. But his upside plus the significant additions at least give ott gm a chance of breaking even or adding high end depth. Otherwise, it’s just a significant step backwards no matter what.
I believe Klefbom + first could prob get Oel. And karlsson will be even more
I would say the same thing, but the situation in Ottawa is ridiculous at this point. It's exploitable. The owner is a complete twat when it comes to spending. Look at how he meddled with the negotiations of top players in the organization in the past.
Management can wait it out and try to get a big deal, but with one year left, time is ticking. Every team knows that. Why fish off a boatload of assets for a guy who can be picked up in FA one year after, while still in his prime, because the owner (melynk, who chased Alfie and Turris out as well) will no way in hell spend 10m+ to keep him. They can try to lowball Ottawa and get him for less than his value, or just wait till he becomes a FA. Every factor is against them at this point. Like I said, wouldn't be surprised if it's straight up considering the parameters of what OK brings in (mainly that golden contract that holds so much value if he truly becomes a consistent top 2 player and the fact that he is younger), but wouldn't be surprised if we have to add either, but nowhere near as much as some of you might think.

Sorry dude, gotta agree with HB77 on this one. Karlsson is gonna command a hefty price, even if he's packaged with Ryan. The only team with the assets and cap space to pull it off is probably Vegas.

I guess we'll have to wait and see honestly.
All I'm saying is don't get surprised if he is had for less than his actual value. Melynk will definitely be involved in one way or another.
Regardless, it's going to be an interesting summer.

Klef/2018 2nd/Benson or Yamamoto would be the most I'd offer (if including a solid prospect hinges the deal). Anything more than that and I hang up the phone. If Ottawa doesn't want that, then fine with me.
No way do I deal this year's first when you consider the choices available.

Dorion would get eviscerated if he did that. Especially Benson. Benson is marginal at best.

I just don't want to give away this year's first.
If they talk about next year's.... then that might change my perspective. As long as Talbot bounces back, that at least makes up on par with the middle of the pack. So it won't be a high pick (hopefully).
Klef/2019 1st/Yamo? Guess similar to what MaxBone said, but just not this year's first. If they want this year's first, it would be a no from me.
