Canucks can afford some expensive UFA’s in the next year and further. I’d restrain from overpaying the tier 2 guys who aren’t true stars but get paid big bucks(like Eriksson).

If you can land a true star Tavares/Karlsson/OEL then sure but otherwise sit on your hands during July 1st and July 2nd when the biggest mistakes are made. Feel free to sign guys to Vanek, MDZ or Gagner type deals(1-3 year terms).

That is correct.

Or why not seriously overpay a second tier guy who's actually good in exchange for a shorter term? Nothing longer than 2 years so he can be moved at the deadline with retained salary for some decent picks.

Someone young like EKane could still sign another long contract extension a year from now. I think you could sell an agent on the idea of them getting another big commission by signing two contracts when they're in their prime. Rather than one now and another when they're over the hill.
