Here are some numbers that i think help put the year in perspective. This is a little bit of a different way of looking at it. I'm tallying cap hit against % of total points as a team. Before i really start, a few numbers that I'll use as a baseline:
For the sake of conversation, we'll call the Sabres cap number $70 million.
The Sabres scored 458 points as a team this year.
Ok, now I'll start with the Fantastic Four - Bogo, Moulson, Gorges and Pominville. The Sabres spent $19.6m on those four players, who contributed 35 points.
$19.6m represents 28% of the Sabres cap. They produced 7% of the points
This is actually a little unfair to Pominville, as he contributed 33 of those points.
So the three amigos are $14m, or 20% of the cap, and contributed .6% percent of the points.
That's not an error. .6% of the points for 20% of the cap.
Now some better news.
Eichel and Reinhart still on their entry deal, and they obviously represented good value
Ryan O'Reilly. 59p for $7.5m: That's 12% of the points for 10% of the cap.
Ristolainen: 40p for $5.4: That's 8% of the points for 7% of the cap.
Okposo: 43p for $6m: That's 9% of the points for 8.5% of the cap
Other guys:
Rodrigues: 22p for $650,000.00: That's just under 1% for 4% of the cap. Good!
Girgensons, 15p for $1.6m: That's 3% of the scoring for 2% of the cap. Not Bad!
Anyway, i thought this might be a novel way to look at where our players stack up as a percentage of the cap and a percentage of points.
My big take away is that there is currently a lot of money that isn't producing. The guys we paid big money (90, 21, 55) are producing at a slightly - slightly - higher level than their pay, but the dead money (the big 4), is wasted, and that, my friends, is why we sucked imo. - jcragcrumple
Nice post
I can appreciate this way of looking at things,
although guys do have value in ways other than just scoring points
Also,
doesn’t take into account games played
And u were unfair to Pominville by these standards
He produced 7% of the points & cost 8% of the Cap hit
And if u go by Eichel’s 10mil Cap hit next year... then he produced 13.5% of our points for 14% of the Cap hit
U generally won’t get “good value” from guys that make the big money
The biggest problem if u ONLY look at it this way though, is that we are the 2nd lowest scoring team, & obviously need more goals
So let’s just say to be a playoff team we need to have around the 15th highest point total...
Maybe then it would be more appropriate to compare the Cap Hits of our players to the Production we will Need to be a good team
Still though...
interesting approach sir

I think it’s like looking at how far someone can run, without taking into consideration how much time it takes them to do it.
O’Reilly can get to 59 points. But it’s taking him 1642 minutes to do so.
Guys who are paid similarly or even less like Scheifele and Couture are putting up those numbers or better in hundreds of less minutes. - sbroads24
They’re also on teams that score a lot more
U really don’t think ROR would have better numbers on the Jets?
O’Reilly is NOT Eichel or McDavid
When u give players more minutes,
it doesn’t necessarily translate to more points... at least not on par with their point percentage with lesser icetime
What I’m saying is...
u give a 3rd liner who plays 15min a game an extra 5min of icetime per...
he’s not gonna score 33% more
In that same respect...
O’Reilly is a good 2nd line player
Just bc he’s given 1st line minutes here,
does NOT mean he’s gonna produce like Jack
All your doing is looking at minutes vs points & not taking into account any sort of context |

Is he?
Earlier this year i tried to find if he was doing anything now & couldn't
I just assumed he took a year off
And I’m sure he will get another job in the league, even though he did a terrible job with us |

I’m not sure he even gets PP2 time there |

Guys score more with more ice time.
Look at Schenn and Couturier
Schenn goes to St. Louis and plays 2 more minutes per game and he’s having a career year
Couturier is playing more because Schenn left and they moved Giroux to wing, and he’s having a career year.

Ok...
how are Kulikov’s numbers this year on a good team (the Jets)
vs
How they were last year for us?
I seriously haven’t looked
But I’ll bet they’re WAY better |
