Yeah but that’s an extreme example, and not really a credit to O’Reilly.

Sure, he’d maybe score more with Laine or Connor or whoever.

But that’s more of a credit to Laine. You don’t need a 7.5 mil center that needs elite wingers to up his game.

He’s a fine player. Not as good as his reputation

- sbroads24

I’ll say this though...

If you would stop the nonsense about RORs “production”
and turn your argument to something along the lines of:
-we aren’t gonna “compete” till after the lockout, so we might as well get the best value for ROR sooner than later...

Ok...
idk if i totally agree,
but i do think that’s a very reasonable convo to have

pretty sure it was after dave was traded for grant, that season

ray played a stretch of games as their other winger to protect those 2

- homiedclown

I think you’re confusing that with Brad May
Pretty sure he got a shot to play with them
And i think he had around 20goals too
Wasn’t May a 1st round pick as well?
Probably why he got the chance,
even though he eventually settled into his role as a 4th liner

Can anyone remember better than us who played with 16 & 89?

Nice article

https://www.nhl.com/sabre...omething-special/c-645906

Doesn’t say who took 25s spot after he was traded though

I actually forgot that he went to Toronto first before Tampa

I used them bc u were comparing him to Schieffle
No one here has said ROR is a superstar
But u calling him average is more off base than however much his Rep MIGHT be inflated

Bottom line...
he’d score more with better wingers
AND
he’d be “more efficient” if we had a 3rd or 4th line that could take some defensive minutes away from him

I don’t think either of those statements are arguable
Seems like common sense

Is he overpaid?
Sure, but what good player WON’T we have to overpay?

O’Reilly is a GOOD player
We need MORE of those... not less

- jdfitz77

I’m saying he’s had an average season. He has.

I do think he’s a pretty good player. But him being unable to be a threat at even strength was a huge issue this year. He shouldn’t be absolved from blame from our 31st place finish

I can’t find anything to prove it...
but I’m almost positive that it was May who ended up taking 25s spot on that line

It was LaFontaine that made the pass on the “May Day” goal

The dude has 3 even strength goals in his last 30 games playing 20 minutes a night.

It’s not nonsense, it’s a reason why we are 31st.

Honest question, could you imagine if he was the 3rd line center and Mittelstadt was takinng PP time and some O zone starts from him? What’s his production then?

Move him now while he’s valuable

the ones we draft and trade for who are on good deals? It's not overly complicated. The way to build, especially after being the first team ever to finish 31st, is to avoid FA contracts like the bubonic plague and amass as much value as you can.

Only when you've established yourself as a playoff team with a legit core can you go out and overpay for immediate FA help.

Should ANYONE be though?
Even Jack...

I don’t think there’s anyone in our team who we don’t need more from

The question is...
Do we keep him / or trade him?

I know u think it’s “easy to replace” good players like ROR & Kane...
but I’m just not with ya there

Kane>>>>>>>>the return we got

If we do trade ROR,
we better get MUCH better assets back

Shipping good players out for “spare parts” isn’t gonna help us

And again, as far as his Cap hit goes...
we are gonna have to overpay for good players here
It’s Buffalo, not Tampa

Our whole team sucked 5v5
Why is it ROR that you’re singling out?

i don't know why you're choosing to make this seem like an insane move to single him out.

Yes most of this team is bad 5v5. but hardly anyone makes 7.5 mil.

Because your good players should be the reason you don’t suck 5 on 5?

Eichel hasn’t sucked 5 on 5.

ROR was like 24 when we traded for him
Whatever guy(s) we trade ROR for we will eventually have to overpay to keep here too

Trading for a bunch of picks that mostly won’t become much is dumb
See the Kane trade as an example

Now if we are trading ROR for Hanifin (just an example)...
ok, that’s worth talking about

U act like we traded for O’Reilly when he was 29
His age got our timeline...
GMTM just blundered it so bad that we’ve been set back

Regardless if he was or wasn’t, Pat still had Mogilny and ROR has nobody’s close to that.

People want ROR gone, they’ll get it. I believe Pierre Lebrun and the players in the league and I think it would be a mistake. Unless he is a big time wiener and can’t get along with Eichel, but it better not be because Jack’s not playing to potential. 10 mil is a lot to pay a 25 goal scorer too.

Yet we are still 31st

ROR isn’t the caliber of player Jack is
The point is to ADD talent to the good players we have

NOT get rid of the good players bc they aren’t “great” and thus, creat more holes

Because we will have to OVERPAY ANYONE

Let’s say we trade ROR for Hanifin
U don’t think we will have to overpay on Hanifin’s next deal to keep him here?
Of course we will !

If we don’t plan on competing for the cup next year, the obvious move is to trade O’Reilly IMO.

Why waste 4 years of him? Get a younger asset that fits our timeline

ROR was a year away from FA. stop trying to bend the figures to fit your argument when you accuse everyone else of doing the same.

If you trade for a cost controlled player, you don't have to overpay to keep him. Not if you're good at your job.

Now that’s an argument I’ll listen to
Makes sense

BUT
The return needs to be legit,
not what we got for Kane

AND
Let’s bring in a “defensive” center at least, bc i don’t think we want Jack or Casey taking on those responsibilities
