he had a nose for the net...now granted, it was Ottawa and they had about enough motivation as the sabres in this one, but he did some things very well...Rodrigues really stood out to me more than anything...

That's part of it. We're only 2 or 3 hours behind those teams, so the games actually come on close to after-work hours. The other part is lots of people here are fans of west coast sports teams almost by default because there's no professional sports here.

The biggest local sports draw is probably the UH women's volleyball team (they're actually really fun to watch live) and the UH basketball team when they're playing well. UH football is not doing so hot lately, and the games are available on TV only via PPV, so I think they've lost a lot of fans (it reminds me of the Blackhawks back in the day). Playing in way-too-big Aloha Stadium, which is nowhere near UH, probably doesn't help student turn out, either.

The thing that sticks in my memory was he pleaded with fans that he was going to lose his house, so he asked them to buy shirts or something to help him raise money. As I recall, the losing his house thing was all pretext, and he was really just scamming the fans.

I think he did a porno (somehow) and has been to jail a few times, too.
