my vote's for pommer
- Michael Pachla

I don't think anyone liked Pommer as captain. People fell for gionta's schtick. But when he was here, everyone talked about how the locker room was divided. Idk how so many liked him as captain

A lot of this is on gionta. He was not the guy to help bring along the next wave of leaders. Steve Ott was a way better leader imo.

Gionta = most overrated captain in sabres history

- jcragcrumple

This team needs more Gionta's. Sorry to break it to you.

With all the young talent about to break in, these kids need several individuals to turn to. JUST LIKE the Amerks.

River made a great point about this earlier this morning, how he was elected captain after being here for a month. He said the one thing the team needed the most was more leadership, and they went out for Greir.

The team needs a few Greirs, a few Drurys, a few Rivets, a few Koivus, a few Toews...

Pommer and maybe Gionta are ultimate professionals. But they're lead by example pros, and when those type of pros have their skills deteriorate, I feel as though they don't earn the respect they deserve from the younger guys.

Find a guy with talent that can tell the kids the right (frank)ing way to do things.

Here's what rustles my jimmies.

I relate to him. I absolutely do. I've played sports most of my life, and I've played on some very good and some very bad teams. However, if one of the reasons you are there, being paid more than your counterparts, is for leadership, and you say you lose passion instead of working harder to fix the overall issue (culture), then you simply shouldn't be a leader. Go be a Larsson.

Okposo is ready to work and make this team better. Eichel same. That's what leaders do. They lead. ROR has failed as a leader. I empathize with his feelings of being beaten and broken (he DID say he started the very first game feeling like that, so wtf), but it's up to the leaders to get up or shut up.

Growing up in sports, this is how I feel. A leader doesn't back down and a leader doesn't quit.

he said "at times" he lost his love for the game...not all the time...the fact that Okposo and skunk had such terrible starts to the season made things even worse

I agree with all of that, especially the last part. We needed a wartime president and we got Jimmy Carter

Yeah....being the highest paid player on a team, and basically saying he quit on them at times.... makes it a lot worse.

But in reality, I don't believe a word the dude says so..... I think he just wants people to feel sorry for him

I still maintain that ROR's role is to lose it 0% of the time. Salary, in a vacuum, has nothing to do with it, as suggested earlier.

But if you're being paid extra (and he is) more than his comparables specifically for leadership, and you lose passion "sometimes" instead of driving harder, you have failed. IMO.

He knew how to be a leader on good teams when it was easy, but he didn't know how to make a bad team good. He was just as soft as Pommer as a leader, but he got a pass because he had cups

Scott Wilson and Jordan Nolan are bigger leaders than ROR

God damn did he just say that

he didn't say he quit, he said he lost his love for the game which makes it more of a chore as opposed to actually going to work and enjoying it...

there's a big difference

This surprises me.
All though not the most vocal captain, I thought we played above our level of talent under pommer.

Nobody, but I would have preferred Steve Ott on a 3 year deal than Gionta that year. Could kept John Scott 2 more years instead of trading for gorges' leadership

While cryin' Ryan was looking for excuses again, Eichel served up an example to emulate for next year in McKinnon. His team now. No question. And cryin' knows it, so he's trying to orchestrate his removal. Good luck to the next team that gets him. I guess they'll be so much better with all the faceoffs they'll win.

Christ...gorges was traded for in 2014...

bringin in those three was like bringing in a journeyman quarterback with a poor o-line on poor team to take the hits while the franchise qb got acclimated

I'm starting to think that it is NO coincidence that ever since we got ROR, our room has been fractured, fragile, and just plain bad. He has to be a part of that, no? He's 27, on his second team after crying his way out of Colorado (due to too much competition to be "the man"), and regarded as a top- flight player/ leader. I think the curtain has been drawn on him. He won that one faceoff though, remember? It was awesome!

It's like calling a kid a crappy person, when in reality, it's the parents who raised them. This is Gionta and gorges legacy

I never got the ROR hype before he got here. I complained when they made the trade and people started hurling advanced stats at me. YAY ADVANCED STATISTICS!

Botterill knows leadership, and Gionta wanted to come back.

Botts didn't want him. That says a lot
