You consider Matthews generational? Dahlin generational? Neither of these guys are close
To Crosby or McJesus. Dahlin is not generational

- CanuckDon

I agree.... but he still could do that. It's a unknown... but the people who label players like Matthews generational based on nothing more than him having a Calder season is laughable. What generation are we talking here? The life span of an insect? And again, AM could end up being one but he has to be better than Crosby who is still winning Cups and handing the Generational crown over to McDavid at this point....

There are players like Matthews every couple of seasons... Even Boeser was having a Matthews type start to his career and he was in 2nd in the Calder race when he went down which points to Barzal being generational as well? Is there a generational talent every season ? Only in Toronto.

Agreed, the term generational is thrown around way to loosely these days. Dahlin is a hell of a prospect but he is NOT generational. Absurd

I would consider generational being the best at a position in a generation, so players drafted from say 2000-2009, 2010-2019, 2020-2029 etc. McDavid is easily the best in his genertaion, Dahlin is looked at the best in his, idk who would be considered for goalie though.

i think matthews and eichel are both franchise centers. dahlin seems like a franchise dman...but there so much unknown about him.

not on the same level as mcdavid.

Sure, but franchise player doesn’t equal generational.

Dahlin is considered a generation defensive talent. Matthews is not, but he is only a step below.
- Retinalz

I think when the term "generational" is used on draft eligible players is always in the context of "potential". Being generational until proven otherwise is not how it works. It's the other way around. So Dahlin has the potential to be a generational dman but remember, it's a projection and nothing else.

Crosby for example, is unquestionably a generational talent and looking to carry his team to the first dynasty in decades with a 3peat. Matthews carried his team to two playoff wins. Big step below.

Agreed.
I would say in my lifetime there have been 5 generatiinal talents, Orr Gretzky Lemeiux Crosby and now McDavid.
Malkin so close but not quite.

I agree. Players like Matthews look like a lock to be franchise players and most teams would love to build a team around a C like that. Rarely does a players of the above class surface in reality. With that being said, there will be 10 players like Matthews in the NHL at least any given time. He's not even the best in his position currently but he's still got a ton of upside yet.... that is pretty reassuring if you are a Leafs fan.

Lidstrom? I'd think he'd be in the conversation as well.

Interesting there are more "generational" forwards than defencemen – and the one everyone thinks about was putting up massive points too.

Philly.

You know how the Cleveland Browns have drafted and had an infinite amount of QB's over the years?

Will they just said on the broadcast that Philly has drafted 8 goaltenders since 2012 in the draft.
