But why do you think Dahlin will be the best in the next 15 years? High praise - CanuckDon
Well for kids born 1997-2012 he very well could be. A kid would have to be very special to accomplish what he has pre-draft and Dahlin will only get better. |

So now we're arguing the word generational and even Leaf fans want in on it. you guys need to find something better to do with your time. - A_SteamingLombardi

Fair enough but Dahlin is not McDavid or Crosby. This should be pretty straight forward what I’m saying? Dahlin had a great year but I wouldn’t classify it as exceptional. I’d put him in a tier with Matthews in terms of their hype. Matthews is incredible but he isn’t generational - CanuckDon
Mathews is good, Eichel level good, not McDavid or Crosby.
I'd say as a prospect that Dahlin is higher rated headed into the draft then Mathews or Eichel. As highly rated for a defencemen as Crosby or McDavid where as centers.
So I'll go out on a limb and call him the same as people called Crosby or McDavid prior to their drafts, Dahlin is a generational prospect. |

Who do you consider generational after Orr then? Just looking at defensemen? Who after Roy for goalies? - Retinalz
You mean next after or other? Lidstrom absolutely for other.... my mind isn't focused right now for who was the next D after Orr. I'd say Brodeur after Roy even though there was ample overlap.

I think of a generatioal talent as the star of superstars or super duperstar, of which there are very few. - Reubenkincade
I would call a player who is better then those around 5 years older and younger then him, a generational player. A career spanning roughly 10 years as one of, if not the best player for their position in the league.
Defencemen who are arguably generational
Dahlin, Karlson or Doighty, neidermiet, Lidstrom, that's 4 players who's careers span over the past 25 years. A little overlap, some gaps as well. But every 5 years or so allows a player to rise to their peak and slow down as a new generation takes hold.
We talk about not signing anyone over 25 because they're to old, a different generation to our kids perhaps..... |

After Roy, Luongo.....
Price actually.
After Orr there was a gap until.... Foote? So many slugs in that time gap.. |

Semantics I suppose. Anyways, enough ink spilled on this topic. Let’s get back to how horrible Lefty’s flyers are - CanuckDon
Just a funny/crazy observation: I think, even including this thread, that this is the least amount of ink spilled about the top of the draft list in the history of this board. Even during the president trophy days I bet we spent more time talking about the #1 spot than Dahlin |

Karate kid you are certain Dahlin is a multiple future Norris winner? That’s some impressive scouting
Edit. Dahlin is a fantastic prospect and any team would be lucky to have him. He could be a Hedman with more flair. But he is still just an unproven prospect. - CanuckDon

Well some people say generational is an "every 20 years" thing. SO who is truly generational? Gretz and Mario are 5 years apart, Orr and Gretz are only 12 years apart.
There are 22 years between Mario and Sid. Does that mean there was no generational talent for more than 20 years? who bridges that gap? Since McDavid is a generational talent, does that now mean that Sid isn't?
Personally I think we should look at each decade and see who was the best. And not just as a whole but in each of the 3 positions. They are the generations best players and therefor generational talents. - Retinalz
Lindros was between mario and sid and he was the real deal, barring getting knocked the frack out he might have been 1 of the best ever |

is it too late to get into the generational vs franchise vs allstar vs plug debate?
Good question if people consider Jagr a 'generational talent' or not.
Hard to not think so, but the terms are so loaded, we should just scrap em.
With that said. Dahlin appears to be a franchise player.
Imo. So was Mathews, Eichel, Hall.
Nico/Nolan not so much. Perhaps Allstars.
Yak is a plug.

Every draft is hyped, b/c it's all unknown to a certain extent.
But some drafts have more high end/can't miss players.
I think this draft is one of em.
That's why i'm glad we saved our 1st OA for this year and didn't blow our load last year on Nico. |

Looking at the scores this morning (didn't watch) and I see peoples playoff bracket, I wondered all along how do you not pick the Pens to threepeat ? They would have been my choice right off the jump. |
