How sweet would it be if NHL benches were bigger and you could have reserve players simply for overtime.
Virtanen in overtime = - classic321
Took Green like 70 games to even try it. I don't get why. |

On the bright side MDC is a bigger bust than everyone in the top 10. - classic321
lol, yeah he was by the far worst pick in that draft. |

Never liked him at all. Ok at the WHC’s but nothing about him impressed me. |

He and Cassels dominated junior, proof that you can't box score scout prospects.
And proof that even a great CHL team might not produce a top 6 F or top 4 D in the NHL. Can't get caught up in Memorial Cup hype |

I dont think he even made the U20's.
He was cut on the first day I remember that. |

JV gets no bones til he understands its a privilege not a given. He is a kid still & will mature one day. Not every kid is adult in RL let alone the NHL at a young age. At least he has no attitude eg crap don’t stink. |

Reminds me of Carbonneau...
A big scoring star in the CHL but turned into one of the greatest shutdown C’s ever. Any scorer cannot live on that alone if survival says otherwise. |

I like the kid, but, even when he's good he's strictly making plays/rushes on his own. He's a one man show. It's exciting to see but again, it's great individual rushes. - LeftCoaster
Ya he needs to be a more inclusive player for sure. He was getting better by seasons end on some cycling/passing plays.
I wouldnt mind seeing him occasionally, in a checking role against speeders like McDavid/Ehlers. |

I think i't's bizarre to treat OT ice as a reward, imagine if coaches did that for PP time as well. Some players are better in certain facets of the game. CBJ used Gagner as a 4th liner at 5v5 at times and yet he was on their top PP unit as a specialist.
Green didn't like Goldobin in some games, yet he still got 2nd unit PP time in those games despite barely or not playing 5v5 in the 3rd period.
Why is 3v3 OT only viewed as a reward? |

He's one kid I would accept taking a flyer on, he's got all the tools and he can skate at what I'd consider an NHL level for today's game, he's got NHL size and he can grow a wicked beard.
Virtanen has all the tools but no tool box, he's a dumbass, probably why Benning likes him so much - LeftCoaster

Or Green for that matter, was drafted as the next Pierre Turgeon or Lafontaine by the Isles but ended up having to reinvent himself as a checking 2-way center in the mold of Carbonneau. |

Lefty conveniently ignores or doesn't notice comingback hard onthe backcheck to the point only speed & great hustle gets it done. But heh what hard work & effort matter when not everyone can do it anyways? 😂😂 |

i know, but you and many others are using it wrong in this case. Stickhandling is as much of a skill as shooting is.
By that logic David Booth had all the tools as well, and we all know he could barely stickhandle too.
Nail Yakupov to me is more of an all tools, no toolbox kinda guy. - Nucker101

I noticed that Green only gave him 3v3 shifts down the stretch of the season when JV was playing better. Clearly he was using it was a reward type of thing.
Playing the Sedins ahead of JV doesn't make sense to me in 3v3 play. |

He's also dumb as a rock on the ice. Like watching a peewee game where every little kid on the ice is chasing the puck and the rest of the ice is wide open. |

Sedins, Gagner and Eriksson had some terrible 5v5 games and yet they got 3v3 shifts..they didn't earn poop

Only sense i can see of a reward was it was on his improvement throughout the season. When or if JV can turn into a puck hound it would be something to see with his speed & size to hit. Puck retrieval is everything & one of the hardest of all tbings to do. |
