I would say because Drats is an outlier based on his one year. At this juncture, he's more offensively talented than Reinhart. Drouin and Drats are also centers mostly, so the comparison isn't exactly equal. - TheSabresTaco
I'm not trying to suggest it's equal. It's not. I'm saying that it has a big impact on high draft picks coming off their ELC's. William Nylander is probably somewhere between Sam and Leon. Is it reasonable to think Sam's value is 1m less than Nylander? Could Nylander see a 7m deal? It seems very plausible to me.

What is any team hoping for in the center position at pick 4-7? You're not going to find Matthews, Eichel, or McDavid. You're shooting for an ROR, a guy who can get you 60pts per year, is strong defensively, and wins face offs. Montreal can either make their pick and hope for a winner who will be good in 2-3 years, or they can have the established guy in his prime now.
Yes, ROR will add the their cap, but if they're not considering a full blown rebuild, than this is probably a solid option for them. - sskkoo1
yeah when teams draft 4th overall, this is there primary concern. Montreal has burned themselves repeatedly trying to speed things up with moves exactly like this.
He makes too much for what he brings, and Montreal's roster is full of that, to the point where they're probably going to have to trade Pacioretty, the one guy worth his salary. |

except he can't otherwise we wouldn't be 31st and trying to move him.
Forget free agency, I can name 10 players in this draft i would take over ROR at his salary. - Sabresfan-365
I can too. They all play wing and defense. I can name 10 better players in the NFL draft class then any of the QB’s that are going to be taken but does that make a difference in where they are going to be drafted ? |

The Sabres don’t need to move anybody. Can start the year with ROR and Sam and Risto on the roster next year. If one of those teams want what we are selling they are going to have to PAY. So yes if Montreal or Vancouver want one of them it starts with this years 1st. If we have to add a prospect like nylander so be it. If they say no, then they can frank themselves. |

Like many here, you're writing off Nylander way too soon. The kid had a bad injury this year and at the end of the season, when finally healed, he started to show he can play. Trading Nylander so soon could very well bite us big time. - sskkoo1
How much time does the guy need to come back from injury. It’s been months. He didn’t play at all in the third period the last game Rochester played. I have almost lost all hope I have in him as a prospect. |

The implication being that defense is a less valuable position? you can find 2nd line centres at any time over the course of a year, rarely get the chance to add elite talent (yes im aware there's risk involved) |

you say this like you have any control over it lol. If botts wants them gone, they're gone.
I think he likes ROR for this team, at least for the next year or two. I think Risto's the guy he'll move. |

This remark is so tired. Maybe the canadiens should inquire about McDavid. He's unable to take the Oilers to the playoffs |

Groin injuries can take a year or more. He showed late this year flash of what he's capable of. He still very young, and I get that people are out of patients, but he's one we should wait on. We could be handing another team a gem if we sell now for beans. |

I would say the C position is the most important with defense being a close second. O’Reilly is a proven commodity as well and that mitigates the risk of taking a d-man that high that won’t be in your lineup for a minimum of 2 years. |

Botterill is a smart man. He won’t trade guys for the sake of trading him. He will maximize any return for anyone we happen to move, if we move anyone at all. |

I don't think trading a guy with a 7.5 mil cap hit, who will probably lose his job (as 2nd line C) by 2020 is just making a move for the hell of it.
It's selling high.
O'Reilly will fetch a good return.

Agreed.
I don't like the odds of RoR playing 81 games and putting up 61 points again this season. If he's not in the long term plan, this is really the ideal time to deal him.

Any pick between 7-20 and a good prospect is more than adequate.
Prospect quality depends on where the pick is or if we need to take on short term salary.
4 of the top 5 rookie scorers (Barzal, Boeser, Keller, Connor) were from picks 7+ in the 1st.

80 with 64
71 with 60
81 with 61
That's 3 of his last 5 years
The other 2
82 with 55
72 with 55
That's a 77.2 with 59 avg so 81 with 61 isn't having this magical season for him, it's right around what he averages.
