Of course they will, and those players will be good...but expecting them to be good enough to elevate your team enough to be on the cusp of the playoffs is folly. Give them a few seasons to develop into quality 2 way players maybe?

Leafs, AVs & Devils all made dramatic leaps i recent seasons
Even the Jets
All i’m saying is we can be close to a playoff spot
With all the new talent we having joining...
it’s not really that big of a leap

Who was lucky to make the playoffs this year? New Jersey? Yeah, they were a longshot so who knows? The Oilers were certainly lucky and overacheived last year.
- Larsson_fan

I mean, Colorado was the worst team in the NHL last year by a good margin (21 points!). They made the playoffs this year. Two years ago, Edmonton and Toronto were the worst two teams in the league. They made the playoffs the next year.

You’re really struggling to wrap your head around this. Those holes are occupied by rookies. Under developed NHL players in key roles. Yes, playoff teams can have a bunch of rookies but only if and when they are surrounded by competent veterans, which you don’t have, not enough anyway. That list of core players will look really good in about 3 years, but if you think a smattering of rookies in key positions can get you to the show on talent alone you haven’t paid attention to your own teams rebuild.

It's a 35 point jump. It is a big leap. Still way too many holes and issues to be thinking that big. Everything would have to go right, starting with goaltending.

We have some talent coming but it’s going to take some time in the nhl... but i’ll Take it. And we might be lucky bastards but we have suffered more than our fair share. ...... I like the moves our gm is making hopefully he can find a finisher for jacks line.

Oh time for sure. you're team wont be contending for squat for quite a few more years. But damn, You're teams rise towards the top is going to escalate quicker than most.

He'll be a Norris favorite in 3-4 years easy.

Dont kid yourself, he is the real deal. And the state of your franchise has drastically changed overnight because of it.

I dont think you really know how badly I wanted this kid

Lol....I warned you guys about tempering expectations a year ago , backed it up with logic and very few of you listened and I was 100% correct.

Wash. Rinse. Repeat.

Who will be at fault when the team doesn’t reach your unrealistic expectations next Spring?

I never said I thought they'd make the playoffs. I don't. All I'm saying is that your post that a last place team can't make the playoffs the next season is wrong because, you know, the last place team from the past two seasons made the playoffs the next season.

Dude, they thought this year was a stealth tank. Sabres fans may be passionate but they are not very bright.

The Sabres played in a poopload of 1 goal games, or 2 or 3 that were empty netters. Plus they were 3-1 vs BOS, 2-2 vs TBL and TOR and 1-1 against NSH. They need to up their game against poopty teams. Aside from EDM I mean, they did well against them, 2-0 outscoring them 8-1.

We’re the Leafs in last place the season prior to last (2015-16)? I know the Oilers certainly were not. We haven’t been in last place since the 2010-11 season.

Also, the Oilers added 4 veterans and didn’t rely on rookies when we made our jump, which is the only way you guys will be able to do it. Not by adding 8 players that weren’t NHL players a season ago.

So you think you’ll be vastly improved this time next season?

They were 3rd from the bottom I think, what does that have to do with anything? The Sabres weren't in last place last year either. They were 5th.

No idea. I think it's certainly possible. Depends on how much they follow the system. When they did they played with anyone like the aforementioned Bruins, Lightning and Preds who are all still playing. When they didn't they got killed by the Islanders.

They were also awful in OT. Just dreadful. Improve that and that's good for a few more points alone. They lost 10 games in OT and 2 in the SO I believe.

Well I think the talent is there in Buffalo, but it’s very Raw . If you guys could get a couple productive veterans it would sure help....so long as you give the Lucic contracts.

Not really
Look at my examples
Toronto & Jersey especially made that leap basically off the back of rookies & young players
