I am worried about the coaching options available like you said. That coach they lost out on to Dallas sounded like a great option.

"The knock on him is that he has a bit of a John Tortorella fiery streak, which might not have played well on a rebuilding team."

I think thats the perfect time to bring in a coach like that. You have a coach like that on a veteran team and they just tune you out. imo

as long as Lindy Ruff isn't the next coach, I am open to anyone

including Joe Sacco, I know he didn't have a good run with Colorado back in the day, but he's been part of that Bruins staff that turned that team around and made them into a contender.

I just want a good coach.

Don't care if he comes from college.

Don't care if he comes from Juniors or the AHL.

Don't care if he is a current assistant.

And don't care if he's coached in the NHL before.

If you have coached before and you have had success, I am interested (if it's the right fit).

If you haven't I am not.

I am curious about assistant coach contracts. I wonder whether you are hired as an assistant, and the coach get's fired, whether you are contractually required to coach under your present contract if the organization decides to install you as the coach. All comes down to the wording of the contract, but I am wondering if there is a norm on this type stuff.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Rangers roll with Lindy for awhile if they are not in love with a coaching option available to them, especially if they don't have to sign him to some replacement contract.

Exactly. It might come with a short life, but it would probably be a good start.

my concern isnt who it is BUT more of what is the hiring telling us the team is doing next yr ...If they hire a college guy then its a 2 -3 yr rebuild with virtually no contracts
right now committed to past this yr , I for one am not interested in that when a sound 5 plan move can gain top power rankings for now & yrs to come
GO with a moderate top notch up & coming asst . in lg ready to spring bd into Head coach and take our core of 7-8 wings & 2-3 D & 1 goailie and transfrom them into a power house , with all the F A signings ( 2-3) & 2 mAJOR TRADES we are back on top and going for the cup...
Frankly the other way ....... not interested seeya in 2020

I could see maybe some assistant coaches maybe getting the right of first refusal for the job, in the event the head coach is fired, but otherwise I don't really think that assistant coaches have a ton of leverage when negotiating their contracts. But who knows.

Yeah it's entirely possible, I have no idea how those contracts are structured. But also, I have to imagine that there aren't too many assistant coaches that aspire to only be assistant coaches forever. I'm sure any of them would jump at the chance to take over a team, even if just on an interim basis. Purely speculation, but it seems to me that teams wouldn't have any trouble inserting an assistant into the head coach role for the remainder of the season if they aren't ready to make a long-term commitment to an outside hire.
