So EP with a goal and assist on the PP today. If I can be "frank" for a second. Playing in the Swedish league< World championships< NHL
We saw last year that Philip Holm 3rd pairing Dman for Sweden in the WC was a very good NHL defender but not exactly a very good NHL player. Probably where EP is right now. He would be a very good AHL player but a mediocre NHL player but with a ton of upside.
30 games in the AHL won't be the worst thing in the world. |

If Pettersson makes the team next year our PP will be insanely fun to watch, I hope Green doesn't hold him off of valuable ice time like he's had to with JV - NorthNuck
Hard not to be putting him in the line up. May really be better to allow him a slower development. |

I think he will be able to step right in next year so long as he doesn't have to play with poor linemates. Play him with Horvat/Boeser or Gagner/Baertschi and he will be fine, he needs guys that can keep up offensively |

If he plays with Horvat/Boeser does he play left wing or would they move Boeser to left wing? I'm also intrigued who Gaudette will get as his linemates. |

Personally I'd put him on the left with Bo/Brock, then obviously have them switch on the PP. If the plan is to have him at C eventually it doesn't make a huge difference what side he's on this year.
Seeing who Gaudette meshes with will be interesting for sure, I could see Green putting him with vets to start, but my hope would be to eventually see him get a look with Granlund and JV. |

It's tough enough breaking into the NHL. Let the kid play his natural side |

I'm not nearly as optimistic as several here are, if this guy is truly a star in the making why would the Canucks rush to ruin his development like they have with a few other players.
Playing in Sweden is not the same as playing in the AHL. I am against rushing players not everyone can produce like Boeser did. Gaudette struggled and I expect Pettersson to struggle. |

Expecting him to start in the NHL and expecting him to play the whole season there are 2 different things. My opinion is that he will show well at camp and probably earn himself a spot to start the year. If he struggles, send him down. Moving between Van and Utica isn't the end of the world.
If we want to be insanely cautious with the youth and have them all play in the AHL that's fine, but those who support that aren't allowed to be angry when we sign bottom 6 FAs to fill the roster spots |

Really, I would love to see the top team from SEL play the best of the AHL.
And your second point is very true but what does a 5OA have to do with a 5th round? |

You want to see an SHL team play an AHL team because of seal scoring rates?
(I don't even know what "seal" stands for. I just know that younger players that come over from the SHL have a much higher scoring rate then AHL players)
Generally speaking, a 5th OA pick "should" have an easier transition into the NHL then a 5th round pick. |

My statement was I would like to see the best from one league play the best from another league.
And generally speaking you are correct, but both McCann and Virtanen were both 1st rounds picks that should have been in the development league, not every failed developed player is Stecher or Hutton |

Yup.
I’ll believe it when I see it.
Not a bad thing to play in the AHL and get called up.
Gaudette did not impress, but I’d be ok with him on the 4th line (not the 2nd).
Pettersson has to show he can play.
He is not a lock imo.

I didn't know if your statement about the team was refering to the "seal" scoring rates as I had mentioned previous. Inter league could be a good thing for lots of reasons. Pre-season games obviously.
SHL is a development league. SuperElit is equivalent to the CHL. Maybe not for level of play. |

I wouldn't say Gaudette struggled. He didn't produce but he didn't struggle. Petterson is a far superior prospect to Boeser. |

But the thing is this year they don't necessarily have to sign a single FA if they don't want to. They have enough forwards and enough Dmen as long as the kids are allowed a fair shot and at least 1 of them steps up. Having said that, I think we could definitely use roster upgrades at a couple of positions, but my point is wasting roster spots on old FAs that won't fetch anything at the deadline shouldn't be necessary. |

Exactly. Unless you are picking a D because he has more upside then a forward. Another OJ over Tkachuk. Fine with it once but not twice. - manvanfan
But which is the better upside? 1st line forward or top 2 dman? |

Damn.
bold statement.
Boesser came in and lit it up from the get go.
If Pettersson can perform at a better level than that, i'd be shocked.
I personally do not expect him to perform at a similar level to Boesser

I don't consider it a bold statement. Boeser was a late first and Petterson would likely be drafted top 3 in a redraft. he is a better prospect. That doesn't mean it will be an easier transition into the NHL though. Boeser had decent size already and Pettersson is a rake. I fully expect him to put up 45-55 pts next season. |

The point of bringing in older UFA's is to give the younger kids more time to develop properly.
Develop.

We have multiple young players who are somewhere between the AHL and the NHL. I'd rather see Liepsic and Goldobin get a shot next year than resign Vanek and Hansen. If Pettersson shows up to camp and plays well enough to earn Greens respect, he should be on the team to start the year. |

Well, i think it's a bold statement.
I know where they were taken in the draft, not sure it's entirely relevant to the conversation (Brock would be a top 5 in a redraft btw).
i think it's bold in regards to comparing Pettersson to Boesser, who had an incredible rookie season, was a calder finalist and finished with 55 pts in 62 games...so he already reached what your ceiling expectations are for EP. |
