A 3rd round pick of making it in the NHL is a fraction of a percent. Sorry, 3rd round picks are not important. Better off trading them for rentals each year.

Actually about 27%+/-

I don’t think anyone is arguing the merit of hitting on picks in later rounds.
That is a given.
The argument is over reacting to the use of a 3rd to secure a top 4 Dman as part of a package to do so (Scandella).

We all want as many picks as possible in every round...and some of those picks can be used as trade bait to secure an NHL player rather than playing odds that are 85%+ against you

- IonSabres

I get that but I wouldn’t go as far as to say “who cares”

You need freebies like that to pan out

But now we basically gave up a 2nd + for Scandella

let's play a game

how many 3rd round picks have made an impact for the sabres between the 2000 draft and 2015 draft

Clarke MacArthur
Andrej Sekera
Marc-Andre Gragnani
Corey Tropp
Corey Fienhage
Brayden McNabb
Matt Mackenzie
Kevin Sundher
Daniel Catenacci
Justin Kea
Nick Baptiste
Brycen Martin
Jonas Johansson

We are also the worst drafting team in the league. Check out Detroit, Pittsburgh, Chicago, Boston, Tampa and then see the results.

You had 4 of them leading the playoffs and you have one in Point looks like another franchise player for Tampa Bay

So to me 3rds are very important if we looked at the nhl players that are stars im sure we find some 3rds

- gerbe75pts

I would venture to say that about 8.5% od the time a team finds an impactful player by drafting them in the 3rd round.

This is about 3rd round picks, (frank)face. Don't bring that poop in here! Every other round is insignificant!

Let’s keep in mind that Vesey and Beaulieu also cost 3rd’s.

If Scandella isn’t resigned that’s three 3rd rounders for 0 important games most likely.

They can matter if you continually do nothing with them

No, we gave up a 3rd and Foligno for a 4th and Scandella

Pommer is probably better than Ennis

That's good asset management

Yup, it is called a 3rd rounder.
Has a 32% chance of playing 100 games in the NHL, 82% of the time on the 4th line or bottom pairing.
You gotta stop over reacting.
No, nobody says to throw them away like candy.
Yes, they should be leveraged to grab a NHL player above 4th line or bottom pairing guys.

Correct, if you don’t build correctly it is a waste, yet the same would be more true for the player selected with that pick though.

Botts likely paid the right price for Blow-U....a bottom pairing guy....that is most likely what a 3rd would provide in a selected player.

Paying a 3rd for the chance to land Vesey was a calculated risk to try to land a top 6 player...it didn’t work out.
Meh.

We gave up a 3rd but we’re last in the league therefore it’s basically a second round pick

So basically when we move Scandella for a 2nd that will be a wash since we gave up a second for him

Basically we got nothing Out of the deal

Good trade ..

Let me go play with free air

Personally I think it was a good trade. But I doubt Scandella is re-signed.

Guhle and Dahlin are the future LD’s, and Scandella will get top 4 UFA money

So I guess with that logic the 60 th pick then essentially a 3rd?
Interesting world you have there...
3rds are 2nds, and 2nds are 3ds
It’s the top of the 3rd.
