this is soooooo lame

if you have pick 62, last pick in the second rd, odds are there will be 31 picks before you make another selection

team really likes a d man, ranked 65th on the board

there is also a winger ranked 56th on the board

the team needs D depth so they pick the guy ranked 65th WITH THEIR LAST PICK IN THE SECOND RD

the 56th ranked player with a late second rd grade thus goes in the 3rd rd

But you would have a better chance at landing that player at pick 63 then 83

By the time you get to 83 you will be in the 3rd - 4th round ranked

When you get 86 - on its players that are raw And have potential to beat out 1st to 2nd round picks

So no player ranked in 2nd has ever made to the 3rd round

Okkkkkkkkkkkk then

Rankings after the first round (even before this probably) have statistically been mediocre at best when determining the outcome of a specific players career. Having the first pick in the 3rd round means you get the best SHOT at a good player in the 3rd round. And really it's not even that, it's just the first shot in the third round. How are you not getting this. I could rank Zadina as the best player in the draft, that doesn't make it so. That's kind of my point. I don't completely disvalue a 3rd, but call it what it is, not a practically 2nd.

This is why I showed you who has been picked there. What you said is simply not true. Your odds at that specific pick are not greater than the average of the 3rd round. in fact, through some element of randomness, your odds are historically worse.

this still implies there's importance in strategy

Sure I agree.
Hence why I said he is MORE right than wrong.
Most players (except the Sabres apparently) can play more than 1 system (strategic plan), but those who have a crappy attitude, fail to committ to it won't win in it.

the only way to ensure you get your player is to trade up and reach a tad early on a player, or draft him a full round early

it's really that simple

Hutton is good for a 5th rounder

Tryamkin was good while he was in the nhl. Demko could be a good one. Pettersson will be really good
