Getting picks to protect players from an expansion team is apples & oranges from EVERY other expansion draft. - Nighthawk
I believe you could only protect 10 or 9 players, that left A LOT of good players available to choose from.
* Clubs will have two options for players they wish to protect in the Expansion Draft:
a) Seven forwards, three defensemen and one goaltender
b) Eight skaters (forwards/defensemen) and one goaltender |

MAF a starting goalie
Neal a big scorer.
Aah throw aways? - Nighthawk
In a salary cap era they are throw aways. |

Can't really blame Columbus with Karlsson, no one saw that coming. Florida, Minny, Nashville really helped them out big time. Minny was in a tough spot though
Surprised Nashville didn't just trade Neal. Guess they preferred to keep Smith/Sissons instead of losing 2 forward since Vegas likely takes Smith/Sissons if Nashville traded Neal.
Florida was just plan stupid, lol at giving up a 30 goal scorer + another top 9 forward just to protect Bjugstad and Petrovic |

Canucks had Sedins Kesler Burrows Edler Garrisson Tanev Hamhuis when Benning started. Not exactly bad players either - VANTEL
All very much over the hill and slow except for Tanev who is always injuried |

Easier to do in the NFL, but I agree. Better to trade a guy 1 year too early than 1 year too late. |

Get a grip.
Preds had too many D to expose.
So Neal became available.
Preds had no cap issues.
Pens could only protect 1 goalie. |

Thanks to trading a 30 goal scorer and top 9 forward allowed Bjugstad to have his best season ever.
They gave up 75 and 44 for 49 points. Dale Tallon answered defence wins championships. |

Wrong
We're talking about what Benning started with
Kesler was coming off of a 25 goal season and was nominated for the Selke with the Ducks lol
Edler just this year is coming off of his 4th highest point total ever.
Sedins put up 70 point seasons during Benning's first year here |

G. McPhee also didn't start with a bunch of garbage. - manvanfan
I'd have to agree.
blank canvas, blank payroll, were gifted expansion draft conditions without any competition from another expansion team, gifted draft picks, no players needing to be moved out etc |

MAF was on the trade block all year . We have Markstrom and Nilsson . Why did we not trade ? Marchesseault Neal Theodore all on the block all year . Meanwhile we are worried about protecting our all stars. How about Markstrom and a second to Pittsburg for MAF.

I do agree that he was given a hell of a running start. A blank slate + those expansion rules in the cap era is a very solid position to be in. Even if he did technically start with "nothing"
Also, hiring Gallant was a fantastic move. |
