He’s on the old side now but still elite depending on cost I’m cool
Still rather go younger put you can’t be picky about elite talent |

O'Reilly, Nylander, add something less valuable than those two.
for
Kane, low draft pick
EDIT: could replace O'Reilly with Ristolainen |

So Kane’s going to be 30 can he be elite for 5 more years or will he slowly decline from being in the nhl for a long time |

As long as he plays with a really good center, he will be effective well into his late 30s. |

I could see Chicago wanting Risto, but you're not getting Kane for him
The Sabres would need to move ROR for blue line help then...looking at you Carolina
Risto Nylander and 32nd overall for Kane
ROR for Faulk

Hossa retires, I wonder what that means for their cap, and if there are any recapture penalties.

There would be a recapture penalty. I don't think this article is saying he's officially retiring, just that he's not going to play again. I think he's just staying on LTIR.

He said "for the right deal". That is what I would do. I really didn't factor whether or not Chicago would do it, but you're probably right.

Yup a la Pronger
It won't effect the Hawks cap during the season just the offseason |

Pat Kane isn't going anywhere IMO |

John Vogl at the BN did a nice piece on the sabres shooting woes.
It's well worth the read, but here's one fact
Buffalo's overall shooting percentage this season was 7.7 percent. Of the 763 seasons put together by NHL teams since 1990, that ranks 745th. |

How is that not cap circumvention? Come on. |

It essentially is, but you know the league has no issue with it. It's far from the first time.

The scummier one to me is Kovy. The team had severe money problems just when the ruble was high due to oil prices, so the league gave them an out from the ridiculous contract. The league, Kovy, the devils and the KHL were all complicit in circumvention.
27 years olds who are playing well don't retire. The contract forced him to retire. |

Hossa retires, his clone is getting drafted by Carolina 2nd overall. As one career ends, another begins. |

So we are ok with trading for P. Kane but when I bring up Kessel (more realistic) I get shamed cause he’s half a year older.... |

You can remove the word essentially because it obviously is.
Why bother having rules about this if they are barely, if ever, enforced? |

Kinda like our Bills with Woods.
So Eric, when you talk to the press, don’t mention the word Retire...and really talk up the injury....but only discovered after the season was over...ok?, Got it? |

No idea what he said or didn't say, but he was working in the league office while on LTIR. Everyone knew he wasn't coming back, or making any attempt to. His injury made it more acceptable.
The owners don't care, the players don't care, only fans of opposing teams care...but would gladly take advantage of it for their own team.
