UFA deals are “overpaid” for the top guys
True or false
“Buff-a-tax” means we will have to overpay players
Whether it’s to keep them here (O’Reilly) or as UFAs (Okposo)
It also means we won’t get upper tier guys to take discounts to come or stay (E.Kane) like Pittsburgh (Crosby) or Tampa (Stamkos)
It also doesn’t mean there aren’t other team who will “overpay” as well
Buff-a-tax is 100% real
There’s not even a reasonable debate otherwise
Jack didn’t extend at a discount, did he?
Sam isn’t gonna sign a long term deal with a hometown discount
Don’t be naive - jdfitz77
How much of a Buff-tax is on McCabe’s deal? How about Pouliot’s? Nelson? Chad Johnson?
What was the Buff-Tax on Pilut? Antipin?
Who thought we “overpaid” on Risto’s deal? You did? |

I wonder how it would’ve worked if PITT had Murray signed to a contract with a NTC/NMC as well?
(And Fleury refused to waive)
The rules said they’d have to protect both, but also said they were only allowed to protect 1 goalie |

eichel at 10 mil per

how is that working for the hawks? - homiedclown

They'd be forced to do the option b: 8 players overall from any position |

not sure why buff a tax is even a point to be made? I accept that sometimes it's a thing. A different GM made the mistake of acquiring a guy with 0 leverage in the negotiations. ROR had him at gun point, and just for kicks, made sure his bro got a job in Roch.
Now this GM has a chance to move on from a bad deal. Buff-a-tax being real or not doesn't change the fact that you can move him for someone who may not be in a position to demand that. |

Apparently u missed the part where is asked if UFA were overpaid for TOP GUYS
No one overlays for the Pouliots of the NHL
U really wanna compare a guy who’d have been in HIGH demand vs players who had little to no demand?
Get a grip
And are YOU trying to say Risto isn’t overpaid?
Pretty sure 5.4mil a season is a ridiculous number for someone YOU think is
“barely a #4”
It’s not like Risto gave us a discount |

The point I’m making with the “Buff-a-tax” is that we are gonna be overpaying just about every top level guy
U don’t consider 10mil a deal for Jack, do u?
That’s more than Stamkos signed for |

So only top guys is where the Buff tax applies?
So those guys are the only ones who want to be paid more to live here.
Makes total sense |

If it were a bad deal, he wouldn't have a chance to move on from it, like Bogo.
It can't be both things: we can get useful assets, and it's a bad deal |

If he plays with Jack, or if they get him a LW, he definitely will. If he plays with Wilson and Reinhart, he'll have 20 goals and 55-60 points again |

Thats turrrrible logic and you know it. Just cause the deal is bad doesn’t mean it can’t be moved. Clarkson was moved. It’s not bogosian bad but it’s a bad deal. You can still get assets, good ones even if the perceived value is still high, which it appears to be. And according to one the rumour guys on here, Botts had a chance to move Bogo last summer for a late pick |

This shouldn’t matter.
A “Buff-tax” implies they are forced to overpay everyone because this city sucks so bad. Which as hilarious as it is, is also so dumb to then say it’s only the top level guys.
So you are guaranteeing me that no one else wanted Pouliot, CJ?
How much “Buff-Tax” was on Okposo’s deal? Even though most people point out he was the top FA forward, and signed the same deal as Lucic did.

Next season we should see a whole lot of different aspects of what's going to happen with this team we have been waiting for so long and now we have the tools to shuffle them around and make something that's it worth while |

Horton was moved there by the leafs after he came back in the deal, Clarkson was active. Played two miserable seasons for them
And I wish I didn't know that either. I knew he'd be bad from day 1, but even this has been beyond my imagination, and that's saying something. |

Yep.
Fleury was the big get. They were going to get a very good player from Nashville regardless, so I don't necessarily put Neal in there.
As poopty as it is, the massacre really helped them bond as a team, and if Gallant doesn't win the Jack Adams unanimously there's something seriously wrong.
Unfortunately, unless Seattle pays less for their franchise these will be the new guidelines. Aside from GMs wising up and not getting bent over a barrel like McPhee did to them. Remember all the trades that were going to happen because of expansion? And then none actually did because McPhee essentially extorted them. So if they get rid of that either with a rule/nudge from Gary, or a collective "(frank) you" from the other GMs, you might not see some of the deals that happened that got them Theodore, Smith and Marchessault, and Haula, and all those 2nd and 3rd round picks that they probably shouldn't have gotten.
It'll be interesting what happens with contracts, but they'll have ~$47M in cap space going into next year. That's if the cap goes up to around $80M. - Wetbandit1
Seattle's fee is reportedly 650M. Same rules from what I read. |
