to me if he wanted to re-sign there it would be a done deal already - Xizord
I still think he will end up with the NYI, but this is likely his only chance at UFA and will likely see what else is out there and / or max out his potential contract value via many offers to take back to the NYI to match. |

Maybe.
Could be a good tactic for getting more money too.
Could also be him waiting to see the new direction of the team. Lou was certainly a good step I think.
He may leave, I just get the feeling that like Stamkos this will drag a bit longer than expected and then we will all learn he resigned with the same team, probably for less than max by a decent margin and Toronto fans will be left wanting again. Another local boy too scared of the spot-light. - nords21
Tavares will wait til late July to sign with the Islanders and the Habs will be left with 15 million in cap space to start the season, since nothing else will be left worth signing.

Hab fans will be left wanting more than the Leaf's... - obie
Only the delusional ones that thought they had a chance. I have never thought their chances were higher than 5%...
1) Too much pressure. Double so if you are signed as a "savior"
2) Tax structure compared to almost any US based team
3) Teams ability to afford him and not lose key pieces within a short time frame (Pacioretty would be a draw for him and we wont be able to afford him if we got Tavares)
4) Quality and standing of the team now. Its a step back from NYI in all likelihood. |

Let's hope he doesn't spend it on anything else... I'd take Kovalchuck on a one year deal and flip him at the deadline but I'd take a pass on anything else... Drouin, Danault, De La Rose and Froese at C guarantees them at top 5 pick and there's 3 C at the top of the draft as of right now

It's at around 5% but it represents the only shot at respectability next season, if not you keep drafting high, no big deal

Of course not, they have to use their money to create jobs.
Do you really think Geoff Molson would have agreed to signing anybody over 1 million if they weren't tax deductible? |

They'd have to move Petry, they already have a few right handed D... Calvin de Haan could be a good pick up |

Petry isnt that bad. He played top line much of the season due to Webers injury and was decent. When shifted down a line where he belongs I think hes a good enough fit. Alzner on the other had... Going to have to catch a GM with some very incriminating evidence for him. |

Not needed. I think hes a decent 2nd pairing RD and had 42 points this last year. Did a decent job of running the PP. |

If the Habs get a good offer they should move him.
His value won't get higher than right now with the season he got. |

I dont disagree with that assessment. They could use a younger 2nd pairing guy that can move the puck faster. |
