I get the logistics of cost and who may/may not pay for them as I run an Arena for a living.
When I spoke to the owner/operators at the Langley Event Centre plus the ownership for the Giants (I was there inquiring about work a few years back) they said that attendance was a factor for the move...maybe not the main one but a huge factor. Plus they wanted a more intimate crowd environment which the Langley Centre gives them. Bottom line is that if the Giants drew better crowds (yes there were subpar Hockey years) they would able to cover the expenses of being in a larger facility and then some. But sometimes reality just takes over.
If Utica moved to Surrey it would be cool for a year or two...but when crowds dwindled (and they would) they wouldn't be able to cover even half of their operations costs which are huge in BC. - LordHumungous
If the Abbotsford Heat couldn't hack it (the Flames affiliate) in a brand spanking new arena, what makes you think the Comets would do any better here? Even now most of our most promising prospects AREN'T going to likely play in Utica for more than a few months unless things go right off the rails this summer for some of them. So would you really pay $20+ to watch players like Reid Boucher, Carter Banks, Megna, Gaunce et. al lumber around the ice?

Abbottsford too far . I would pay to see Dahlen MacEwen Sautner Goldobin Palmu Lind . Not Megna Boucher Chaput |

Yeah I was in a meeting with the Toigo's around the time the move was announce and they were saying that every EDM show cost them at least $5k in repairs; and as you mentioned didnt like the amount of empty seats
I think the hockey market is a little over-saturated in metro Vancouver that someone would feel the pain if the AHL was also here. There would be the Canucks, "Comets", Giants, 3 BCHL teams, and the PJHL, hockey that covers all price points yet the ripple effect of the new team would likely force more relocations than those leagues already see |

Not sure AHL hockey would fly in Van. Giants moved to Langley as they couldn't put 3000 asses in the seats some nights. Van fans are just to fickle with Hockey and money. can't see it working IMO. - LordHumungous
A lot of it was the operating cost at the Pacific Coliseum

I think the /sports/ market in Metro Vancouver is oversaturated period. Not to mention about a billion other different things you can do instead of go to a sports event. |

Yeah I wouldnt say the whole sports market is over saturated, but more that it isnt really a sports town in general. If another professional sport came in, I'd give them a moderate chance of success, but as a whole youre right in that there are many other things to do instead (not to mention cost of living reducing disposable income) |

side note: the kane deal should provide some perspective for those who think carlson is signing for less than 7M per year |

For Carlson ?
ya'll know he'd get injured halfway through the season and be untradeable. |

Seems legit. Except you still have Guddy on the team
Where is the #10 pick? I don't see him on the team |
