Trevor Shackles: Could Alfredsson join new ownership once Melnyk leaves? Daniel Alfredsson appears interested in coming back to the Senators...so long as Eugene Melnyk is out.

nah. Eugene is a child

He will go bankrupt before he sells a team to Alfie just out of spite

I don't think Alfie should be involved at all.

Yes I agree Melnyk should sell the team to someone who will make us competitive. But Alfie quit on this team and this community twice now. I for one don't want to give him the chance to do it a 3rd time.

the off the record comments becoming public by Alfie probably was one of the worst things to happen to fans who wants Eugene to sell. The guy seems to be fuelled by this kind of stuff

He left because there was one common denominator: Melnyk. Under a normal owner he would've been here the entire time.

Over $8b in new development construction around the LRT at Pimisi (LeBretton) and Bayview stations alone.

The Senators are a small part of a massive rebuild of the Ottawa downtown core.

Melnyk has scaled down the front office, marketing and ticket sales to nothing. He has no intention of continuing on as owner. He is merely posturing a position hoping to skim an extra $50m out of the sale price of the Senators. This is a guy on the way out.

I think the money and management are already lined up and ready to go. But Melnyk is holding onto his cards trying to squeeze every last ounce of juice out of the situation.

I believe Alfredsson will take on a role similar to the one played by Shanahan in Toronto.

It is no secret that Alfie is aligned with some of the big money interests that are trying to buy the Sens. Melnyk knows who they are. Not selling is merely a proxy for "I want more money."

Think about it. He is not going to sell the team but he has gutted the scouting staff and the marketing department. Melnyk is on his way out.

Announced today that Karlsson will be offered 8 year deal July 1. We know Karlsson does not resign with Melnyk in command. So, is that the magic date for announcing the new ownership and management group?

If Melnyk had just given Alfredsson what he wanted, he wouldn't have left for Detroit. There was no reason for him to even think about it, but for some stupid reason he played hard ball. Plus his quote yesterday confirms why he left the second time---he didn't want to work for him.

Very questionable journalistic ethics displayed here. The best in the business keep off the record comments to themselves. Guess there is a reason she has less than 3000 followers.

Nevertheless, this fuels the speculation that the ownership is a tire fire. Not sure this will help the situation or make it worse. The organization has just let go (or they quit?) scouts without replacing them in one of the more important drafts in the franchise history. Lebreton is going no where. And the Karlsson ice can't get much thinner.

I still believe there is a chance Eugene sells in the not so distant future. No idea how he can enjoy being an owner with next to no one liking him and the team allegedly not making him any money.

Comparing Mario’s involvements with the pens to Alfredsson potential involvement is a hell of a stretch

Why is it a stretch if we don't even know what hypothetical role he'd be in? He could very well be a partial owner (albeit, with not a whole lot of capital), and I made the Lemieux comparison b/c of the same legendary status with the team

bc the Penguins were on the verge of being bankrupt and he converted what he was owed by them into a share into the team...while still playing

https://www.nytimes.com/1...he-bankrupt-penguins.html

Thats why its a stretch to compare the two ownerships scenarios..besides being ex players, the involvement would be nothing alike

You guys are taking the comparison much too literally. The comparison is just that Alfie could potentially be part of an ownership group for the Sens, for the better, like Mario did in Pittsburgh. The actual roles and execution would be much different, obviously.

Oh we get that, and as mentioned besides the legendary status its the own comparison

But even on this blog you see Alfie hate for "quitting on the team twice". Seems like there might be mixed reactions on Alfie in sens nation

Mario was beloved, to become the franchise savour from bankruptcy and relocation, that brought them 3 cups as an owner. Thats why its a bit of a stretch, but im sure if he got the team away from Eugene he would be beloved by all sens fans again

That's exactly the positive sort of spin people are putting on that. Alfie could very well lead the team in a further hole. Who knows what Mario's legacy as an owner would have been if he didn't land the best player in the NHL since, himself.

Bottom line, Sens ownership is a mess and needs to be fixed sooner than later. It's only a matter of time before more poop is leaked through the media. Inevitable in this day in age.

Yes thank you, it's literally just a comparison because they're both former legends. And Alfredsson might be involved with ownership. Obviously it's not 100% the same situation.

I guess the question is, who's to blame if he said off the record after saying it.

I suppose technically, she is. But I think most journalists would respect Alfreddson's wishes on the matter.

But I'm not a journalist.

Mario built an ownership group to purchase a team in bankruptcy... and for fantasy sake save the team. Reality is the team owed him mucho dollars and he needed the team solvent to recoup the money.

This isn’t necessarily unsurprising news, but it is nice to hear it confirmed

This sentence kind of hurts my brain.
