I have used the Virtanen hit on Polak, from a couple seasons back, as a measuring stick for suspensions.
Virtanen got 2 games for being a split second late on the hit, very similar to this hit, IMO.
Neither hit deserved a suspension, yet 1 player breaking into league gets suspension, the other doesn't.
I strongly believe that suspension to Virtanen is the reason he is apprehensive on hitting since then.
Zero consistency in this league.

Yeah I remember, that was then this is now, I don't see anything wrong with either hit. There isn't the awareness on the ice by the players now that there was back in the day because they just think the league will protect them.

Jake came out and said when he came back from Utica , he does not want to be a one dimensional player that is a 3 rd line checker/fighter. He wants to be a top 6 forward . He was showing signs of that towards the end of the year.

He gets called a meathead quite a bit on these boards but when he makes an adjustment to correct his game he gets called out again(not by you). I think he still hits more than anyone on the team but he is more selective now.

Far too many puck watchers nowadays. Very few players are aware of where the other teams players are.

That's why you make a trade beforehand with Tanev and one of Hutton, Gudbranson, MDZ to open up a spot for him so that he can grow with OJ as our eventual top pair.

Mdz and Hutton and edler can go

LHD remaining...

Agreed.
I am a Jake supporter, but, this is a big year for him to show himself.
He may never be a top line guy, but he very well could be a very versatile player, filling in on any of the top 9, including the checking line, against speedsters like McDavid and Ehlers.

Major difference, Wilson was still skating when he made the hit and came from the side and slightly behind which is a classic blindside hit that was a charge and was almost a second late. Was it egregious? No, but again he's had a history of these borderline type hits and was suspended already during these playoffs. Virtanen had no history but a message was being sent at the time to players to tone it down to try and prevent injuries especially as the NFL was getting dinged HUGE for concussions in the courts which is why Virtanen got a suspension instead of a fine or warning.

I seen about a week ago that he is already training very hard, taking this year seriously.

I think he either comes to camp more mature trying to be a leader for the new guys or it takes him half a year again to figure it out.

I think him and Gaudette can pair up nicely. They need someone better than a Gagner Eriksson or Baertschi though.

I thought Gaudette got better every game but I'm not sure he's ready for the NHL yet. Big training camp for him.

I wouldn't mind seeing him with Goldobin and Gaudette, i think Sutter might also work, as long as they put the puck on Virtanens side and let him go fetch it.😀

They will turn Sam Bennett into a star, not so much with any of the garbage they will be able to claim from Canucks.

Hey if it wasn't for Gaudreau taking lumberjack swings at players with his stick , Calgary would be a forgotten team. I guess bad press is better than no press

Kesler would have been a perfect fit in CGY. You guys have a history of trading for big names and have them coming over and doing nada

I don't mind Kes, he never got under my skin for wanting to leave. If we'd have drafted Pastrnak no one would remember who he was.
