Now if we can jettison Russels deal, that opens up a few things. It’s the ideal move for the franchise for so many reasons

Sekera would prob be easier to move, and it’d be nice to have the cap space and be free of protecting him from expansion. but letting him go for nothing concerns me with the group we currently have

We discussed this to death earlier I thought but Sekera I don't think will need expansion protection if the same rules apply. Russell and Lucic will. Sekera only has NTC protection his last two years not full no move. The other two have no move for the duration of their deal.

In that case I’m almost in favour of keeping him.
At least until there’s a tangible replacement.

And to this point, there's conflicting information on whether Russell actually has a NMC or not. Capfriendly and initial reports from major outlets say yes; Spotrac and (allegedly) Chiarelli from the Oilers fan appreciation dinner says no. Not sure which side is right, honestly.

Good blog. Can't agree more expect maybe even to take it even further. As much Chiarelli got crapped on for creating cap space we didn't use in the Eberle Trade we do actually need that space now and moveing forward.

Even if the cap goes up this year to 82 the Oilers long term have an extremly difficult cap situation moving forward. Mcdavids 12.5 is gross. Leon 8 per is actually decent with the cap going up so much.

Sekera, if he returns to form, is a solid D man and we should keep him. Doubly so if we do not need to expansion protect him.

Russell, who I like, will need to be traded forsure next year. I think he is worth his 4 mill per but at the same time hopefully somoene from within the organization can elevate to replace him for cheaper: Jones, Bear, Lag... etc.

Nurse hopefully gets a bridge cause we still dont know what we have with him.

Goaltending moving forward. Jessie. Nurse. Larsson soon enough. Its going to be very important moving forward that we have space to sign our core guys and up and coming prospects.

Also, surprised Wayne Simmonds name hasn't been floated around here. I think he would make a great addition if Philly is willing to let him go this offseason. Don't know what Philly would accept for him though.

Simmonds is slowing down and I have concerns over retaining him as he gets into his 30s (like Lucic). Besides we need more speed.
