It's completely possible. I think it's pretty ignorant to suggest a guy drafted top10 has reached his potential at 21. We all know D take longer, yet the sky is falling trading for a 21 year old that hasn't lived up to the hype yet. The price has to right, but I would be inquiring for sure.
Here's a list of guys I think worked well for Van:
Trades:
Sbisa
Granlund
Sutter
Baerschi
UFA's
MDZ
I'm just saying the rate of success with the pro's is not much better or worse than those drafted. More than half the guys JB has drafted will not be regulars, best to deal with that reality now. - neem55
D do take longer. The best D when they arrive at whatever age. They arrive in a noticeable way. Hanifin hasnt shown enough after 3 full seasons that people are saying that he is going to be a first pairing D. |

Boquist at 18 has very similar numbers to Karlsson and already possesses an NHL shot/IQ. Dobson has a higher ceiling right now, as many 18 year olds do: because at that age they all have more potential than actual ability. it's the catch-22 of the draft everyone is good because no one hasn't panned out yet. - neem55
This boqvist Karlsson comparison needs to stop. They both had poor numbers. So Boq will also exceed expectations and be similar to Karlsson? It literally makes zero sense. Why not pick somebody with better numbers than Karlsson? There are plenty D with better numbers this draft. Why do you keep comparing these two players? I know you will say scouts know more than me and they told you so. Anyways, hope everyone is having a great night! |

But he's going to cost more than just the #7 pick. Are you willing to pay 2 for 1? - 1970vintage
Honestly I am on the fence about #7 for Hanifin to begin with. I would trade pretty much any other asset for him, including Dahlen who will be a very very good player. In a perfect world Dahlen + very small add for NH and we draft a right with #7. |

Nice. It is convenient to leave out the players that have worked well. Sutter has been as advertised and was far and away our best d-forward. The story that somehow our management is only able to draft players is a funny one, when the team is losing apparently the drafting is the only thing that can't be blamed. we don't have a goalie. We have two, maybe three NHL dmen and 6-8 forwards of that calibre. It's not the pro scouts fault - neem55
sutter is not good he is a 4th line center |

Yes this exactly what I hope happens. Get Hanifin without the 7th and then draft Dobson at 7th. Then we would just need to add one more top 4 defensemen.
Hanifin - Dobson
OJ -
Tryamkin - Stetcher
Hopefully we can add a few more picks and walk away with another defense prospect or two.. Hoping for Woo, Addison, Miller or Merkley |

I basically meant that we need to add multiple top 4 defensemen.
Adding hanifin for the 7th is like trading a future dman for another. I would like to add him for a different piece. |

I think he's as likely to be a top pairing player as any of the top d in this draft outside of dahlin.
I think he's got a lessor chance of busting then any of the d in this draft |

This is the only reason to go with Hanafin, and it's a matter of opinion/where people see his progression whether this is the case. I think he's showing an upward trend, lots of growing to do, and I agree it's much more likely at this point that he continues to be a mainstay and could easily already be top4. |

It's an interesting take, Dahlen or 7 as having more value. If the player ends up being Wahlstrom you could be right but Dahlen might have more value at this point... it's close. |
