Nope. Juolevi's stock has fallen hard since he was drafted. And Benning reached for him at #5 to begin with. He's not worth nearly what you think he is

Not only that, but the Canes are stocked with superior young talent on the back end. What they need are forward prospects

Obviously you aren't entertaining offers for Pettersson, so I'd say the 7th overall + one of: Gaudette, Demko, or Lind would get it done

It's steep, but look at the premium placed on top-four d-men these days. Adam freaking Larsson netted a potential Hart Trophy winner. And I realize that was Peter Chiarelli's work, but let's be honest.....if there's a GM in this league who's less competent than Chia, it's Benning

- AxlRose91

There was no reach. He was the highest ranked D prospect available and it's not even settled that taking Tkachuk would have been better. We'll see in a couple of more years...

Jim - DO NOT try and speed up your rebuild taking short cuts and filling age gaps. If Carolina is looking to move big H they must have a reason. Draft, develop. If you can move Beartschi + Hutton then by all means.

Hanifin for 7 th and Eriksson

That deal would only be fair if we threw in Peterssen

What exactly is an age gap? Given our current roster don’t we have an age gap from 17-40? So all trades are shortcuts?

Even just trading the 7th overall pick says "I think we are closer to competing for a cup then for 31st place" I don't believe that's true, stay the course, be patient, continue to build. They will likely get a player as good or better at 7 this year, who will help the team more in a few years when they are actually getting better.

problem is it's likely the 7th +.

if you have to add a pick and a prospect, then it's not the right time. if the canes are dumb enough to take the 7th and sutter, than it's a no-brainer imo.

That's still too much IMO. Sutter is just holding down the fort for the next 2-3 years and his balls are a very valuable contributor to the leadership group.

his balls are only worth about 15 points each a season.

30 point centers are a dime a dozen.

Yeah instead of having one guy calling the shots and taking up a big paycheque, he's trying to spread that money around and get a bunch of different voices in on the decisions and not have just one guy that can sewer the whole organization on his own.

What? If adding a established top four 21 year old says competing for a cup and not rebuilding... then Engrish is your second language I guess.

So is trading players like Boeser for high picks a discussion we should be having because he's not in the right age group? OJ went the draft after Hanifin. One year apart.

What age group do you think we are entering here? We need as many quality players 18-22 as possible. Hanifin is in the age group but is not a gamble to be top 4. Still has all the upside that a quality 21 year old d-man should have. We are not at day ZERO in the rebuild... that's not possible with Horvat, Boeser, Demko, Peterrssen, Gaudette, OJ, Lind, Dahlen, in the system already. Hanifin fits right into that group with experience already.

OJ with a small add for NH makes too much sense. OJ still has a lot of potential and a high ceiling with 3 years of cost protection(something the owner seems to want) is pretty close to NHL ready and is better than Fleury or Bean. We lose that 3 years but Cap and money is no issue for us/aqua and get an established #3 that still has tons of potential to be a top pairing guy. with reg PP1 time NH could reach around 50pts this season i'd say.

carolina doesn't need a dman. they need forwards.

Hey look, I don't feel like I need to convince you. I believe that the player available at 7 is going to have a higher potential than NH, an already established NHL defenceman, who is I believe an RFA. If the Canucks had another deal on the table where they were trading say Tanev for a pick slightly lower in the 1st round plus an additional second, and they felt that they could get a player they like in the 10-20 spot, plus an additional pick, then maybe it's worth looking at. But why is Carolina shopping this player if he's a legit top 4 d-man? I'm just not interested in anything to do with trading futures for nows.

Hanifin's not going anywhere unless the Canes' get an offer they can't refuse. Galenychuk is a starting point, but frankly don't see that or similar happening.

Hey Bingo - Leaf fan here

What would it realistically take to trade for R. Mckeown?
