If Jake Virtanen were to (developmentally speaking) plateau and repeat essentially the same season he had last year, what do you people think he would be valued at in terms of draft pick(s)? |

I think you are confusing me with someone else because I never mentioned anything related to the bold. - RonPielep
😆 I responded to someones comment. Didnt pay much attention to who I talk to after.
The point is, doesnt matter how long you take to get to the NHL. If you dont show the ability to be a 1st pairing after the first few seasons the likelyhood is less likely. OJ hasnt even played yet. So to think OJ's stock has dropped. Its a bit ridiculous.
Hanifin you could make the argument he is stuck behind better. My argument would be he just isnt better then the others. |

Would be no point in trading him. Even if last season is the Jake we got, he still played like a solid 3rd liner most of the time. |

Couldn't you replace the 1st pairing in your argument with 2nd pairing and say at least Hanifin has proven that he is such (as a lower bound) whereas OJ's lower bound has yet to be properly established? |

Played over 23 minutes a game in his first 3 seasons in the NHL. Topped Chicago all 3 seasons. Was well on his way.
I'm sure someone at some point in time has. The point being it's unlikely. |

I think it's more an issue of partners than anything.
Hanifin has seen a steady rotation of D partners for most of his career, the vast majority of which were not NHL calibre players.
When he's bumped up to a higher pairing/more minutes with Faulk, he thrives, but Faulk stunk up the joint so you don't really want them playing together.
When he's saddled with Klas Dahlbeck, well, he doesn't get to play much.
Last year he showed a lot of improvement in playing a more consistent role with TVR. It's not that Hanifin has played poorly, it's that Bill Peters used him poorly.
My guess is that with a new coach that worries more about how a guy is playing than where he is standing on the ice at a very specific moment, he's going to thrive. |

i think you're mixing up age as the correlation to 1st pairing vs. experience.

Players can look better when playing with different partners. I don't know what you mean by "used" him poorly? 63% Ozone starts. Do you want him to play more defensively? |

I don't really think he plateaued last year. He may not have put up a lot of points but he was definitely a better player than he was last season.
He has wheels and a pretty good shot. |

More with a more regular D partner, or in a system that allows him to play and grow rather than hammering on positioning in specific situations.
Peters tried to force-feed guys systems and positioning stuff constantly until they tuned him out entirely.
Imagine taking a comedy class and having a teacher who only wants you to write your jokes so that they hit exactly on the timing and word use that his theory preaches. Whether or not they're actually funny doesn't matter. That's Bill Peters.
