I’d like to see them delay for another year on Jack.
Personally, he can still use another year of maturing...and hottake — Dahlin will eventually prove to be the heart and soul of this team. - IonSabres
It would be great surprise if jack isn't named captain this fall. This is his franchise. Although jack is probably looking over his shoulder at the new kid.
Press conference in September
New Jersey? Old blue and gold
New number ? #9 is available
New captain ? #9Jackeichel

In the last 10 years, they've busted on 1 first rounder, and actually drafted Carlson that year with the other 1st rounder. - sbroads24
Excluding the last 3 drafts,
since those guys are still developing...
The Caps have had 16 picks in the 1st,
dating back to the Ovechkin draft
I went back to that draft bc he’s obviously the key guy they’ve built this team around
Ovechkin, Backstrom, Carlson, Kuznetsov...
all big hits of course
Wilson, Burakovsky & Vrana are all decent players who are contributing
So that’s 7/16
Now u can say the other 9 weren’t all busts,
but Forsberg (dumb trade) & maybe Johansson (cap reasons) would still be on the team if they could
So let’s say that 7/16 were either busts,
or at least guys they felt they couldn’t win with (Vrlamov, Green, Alzner, etc)

They should add some old veteran speed like vanek.
He can take the place of moulson/ nolan/ pouliot.
You hate to see any of these young guys step up and lead. That's the worse case senario:

Typo?
I’ll admit he can still score,
but “speed” is not an accurate description for him at all |

Sorry, but if the Sabres ink Vanek, I will lose all faith in the management team.
Old, slow and the antithisis of leadership.
Stay way from the young core, at all costs. - IonSabres

The Caps have the best 1st round record in the NHL since Ovi. From 2004-2014, the've missed on 3 players. 2 were from 2005. 13/16 is exemplary. |

Let's do it this way, how many 1st rounders of theirs in the past 16 years, are worse or equal to Zemgus Girgensons? |

Not really
Just bc guys are “ok” NHL players,
doesn’t mean they were good picks
Neither of us would call Vrlamov a bust,
but obviously the Caps felt he wasn’t the guy & needed better from the position
Pretty sure u think Alzner stinks, right?
For the #5 overall pick, he should’ve been one of the cornerstones of their team instead of a guy they let walk away for nothing
Mike Green...
once he stopped scoring 20 goals a year, they needed to move on bc he was so bad in his own end
Etc, etc, etc
So again... not “busts” per say
But we are talking about drafting guys to build a Cup winner, right?
Well,
those are guys the Caps moved on from bc they needed better than what they were producing
I think it’s totally safe to say that those picks “didn’t work out” |

Sorry Fitz, but this is terrible logic. Your definition of "didn't work out" ends at trading the asset or letting him walk? Come on.
Did Dave Andreychuk "work out"? Did Housley? Ruff? Campbell? Miller? Pommer? Audette? Mogilny???
These guys were traded. And not because "they didn't work out". |

Is “Girgs” the point?
Or is the point...
what guys have they picked that have “worked out” to build this championship contending team?
U don’t have to be “girgensons bad” to have been a pick that didn’t work out |

I would say a fair definition of "didn't work out" would be a 1st rounder that plays less than 100 games in the NHL. Open to interpretation of course, but ideally, a 1st rounder is a long time NHLer, on any team. If he's not, then he's probably a bust, due to talent or injury. |

Yeah, as far as building this championship team goes
If they’d traded Forsberg for a guy who’s playing for them now & contributing...
then ok
But even though he’s a great player,
that pick didn’t “work out” to actually be of any help to them
And other guys I’ve mentioned above...
if they aren’t helping the Caps win,
then what’s it matter?
Let’s just say we trade away Sam,
and get back a prospect & a 1st
But neither work out to help us
Even though Sam could continue to score around 20goals a season for the rest of his career,
that pick would still have been a “bust” in the sense that it ended up not helping us get to the promised land so to speak
But if the prospect & pick turn out to be good players who help us turn into a winner...
or we just keep Sam & he helps turn us into contenders...
then it was a good pick
Or pick we got value from which helped us
See what I’m saying?
Just bc Alzner wasn’t Girgensons bad,
doesn’t mean it was a good pick at #5 overall |

I have been thinking of Max Pacioretti, can score, leadership ability, 29 so not ancient, has decent wheels. Not sure what the cost would be. |
