The salary for Hoffman isn’t the issue
Paying him till he’s 39 is

You’re gonna pay him 7mil + till he’s almost 40?
Can’t do it imo
And it doesn’t make sense to trade those assets to let him walk in 2yrs

He’s just not a fit for our timeline imo

Just bc he’s good,
doesn’t mean it’s the “right” acquisition

If things went well with Eichel, offer him a 6 year, 7-8m per deal.

If they don't work together, you flip him next summer before the contract ends

You wont get nearly when you sent for him in that kind of return, it's bad asset management

Yeah, totally agree
Hoffman is a good player
Just not a good fit

If he was signed for 5 more years, instead of just 2, then it would work

I think it’s a terrible idea
Don’t think he’d agree to a shorter term deal when he could go to UFA & get 7yrs

And like Stripes said,
i don’t think we’d get as much back if we tried to flip him

Essentially,
We’d be bringing him in for 1 year

I think for the assets he’d cost,
we’d be better off looking at a player who fits the timeline better

Instead of Hoffman or Stone, why not target Max Domi? Fits the age window a lot better and can probably be had for the same or less than the other two.

Nylander, McCabe + 32 should get close. Add a 3rd or Bailey/Fasching to get over the top if necessary.

U don’t think that’s WAY too much for a guy who’s had 2 down years in a row?
Only scored 9 goals last season

His age is obviously nice,
but Stone at 26 is the perfect guy to try & get imo
We KNOW for sure that he’s a really good player
Whereas we’d be HOPING Domi develops into one

Hoffman is definitely out for me,
for reasons i stayed in previous posts

I’ve been saying that same thing to all my Leaf buddies and my Dad who is a Leafs fan. They are a victim of their own overachieving. Could you imagine if they missed the playoffs the last two years and picked top 10 how much more dangerous they would be. Including the returns they could have gotten a year ago for JVR and Bozak if they weren’t in “win now” mode. Also save an additional $6.25M in cap space since they wouldn’t have Marleau. They would have been downright scary.
- Pegullaville

Exactly. The built a good and fun team to watch, but they didn't stack the deck. This team won't be a contender without some late-round picks becoming homeruns and Lilgeren developing in a franchise Dman.

It's done. I have made a trade in the sens blog

2019 1st, Reinhart, Nylander and #32

for

Hoffman and Stone

- jcragcrumple

Don’t think that’s a good trade... we love giving away our draft picks too much ( sabres not you) we are never going to build any depth trading 4 guys for two...

IMHO. We aren’t in a position to be trading like this now. If we were two players for the cup, sure but we aren’t.

I also don’t understand the logic of trading a 22/23 year old winger that has gotten better every year away when we need wingers that can score.

If you can get a massive over payment for any player , fine otherwise stay the course hope one of the young guys can contribute or sign a couple f/a vets... in one more year hopefully nylander is ready and a couple of the other guys that are in Rochester will be too. We added a bunch of talented players to Rochester and or possibly the Sabres this off season... I think they should see where some of these players slot in before making a bunch of trades.

Sure, I get all that. But...

Hoffman-Eichel-Stone
Mitts-ROR-Okposo
Wilson-Erod-Baptiste
Bailey-O'Regan-Pominville

Dahlin-Risto
Scandella-Nelson
Mccabe-Bogo

Ullmark

That's not a lottery team imo

Plus we still have the SJS first next year. Stone is a clear upgrade over Reinhart. Hoffman is a position on need.

The core would be set: Eichel, Dahlin, Mitts, Stone, Hoffman.

I get the patience argument though. That first line tho...

It's second hand info, but it's the same person who told me about Kim Pegula's disdain for Kane a long time before it became common knowledge

I've always been under the impression that O'reilly wants to be the man, captain and 1C. He's not getting that here with Eichel and he knows it. But now with the sudden emergence of Mittelstadt, he won't accept taking a spot on the wing or 3C. I really believe he wants out.

From what I heard, O'Reilly is an incredibly nice dude and good teammate, but 100% does not want to be a role player.

Also said he's incredibly manipulative and the stuff he says to the media is very calculated, and has rubbed the locker room the worng way.

Not surprised Toronto is running into problems. We heard so much about how they did their rebuild right, but did they really? I think they jumped the gun like we did.

Toronto landed a franchise center and two good wingers. That equates to 1 very good line, not a full team. They're losing JVR and Bozak, their bottom 6 isn't anything great, and their defense sucks. They do have a good goaltender and I've heard they have a goalie prospect that's stellar.

But, still, Matthews, Marner, Nylander, and Anderson is not enough by themselves to win a cup or even go deep into the playoffs. They have few nice pieces in the barn, but I wouldn't consider them a deep franchise. They should have stayed with the tanking for another season or two, but choose to begin competing once they landed Matthews. It was a mistake and I believe we'll see them pay for it.

- sskkoo1

Toronto should have stuck to the 5-6 year pagula tank plan. Painful but hopefully we move past the 1st round of the playoffs

Didn't look it up thought Stone was at least 27 or 28. You're right on Hoffman methinks.

I truly think Domi is a good one though. Yes only 9 goals this year, but still had 45 points (on a team that scored like us last year). I would gladly give up a 2nd rounder, bottom6 forward and a third pairing guy for a solid 50pt winger.

Incredibly nice dude and incredibly manipulative seems contradictory. What is it you feel O'reilly wants in order to keep him happy?

No idea. I don't think he likes losing, or being the 3rd or 4th wheel like he was in COL.

Saw that Anaheim is looking to trade Perry. Would it be worth trying to trade Okposo for Perry?

Perry 3 more years at $8.6m
Or
Okposo 5 more years at $6m

Maybe add picks either way, but we get out of the long term deal and Anaheim frees up $2.6m cap space.

Well, hopeful the losing is over, but has for him being the 4th wheel, there's nothing anyone can do about that. Eiche, Dahlin, and soon, Mittelstadt will all be ahead off him on this roster, so if he can't handle that, than maybe it's best to part ways. He can be 1C in Montreal and we sure can use the 3 OA to get Jack a winger.
