This makes it a 2nd round pick. He is wrong, and if you're arguing for him and on his side, may God have mercy on your soul. - SDSabre
I never said it wasn’t a 2nd round pick did I ? It clearly is a second round pick. Just like Asplund was when we drafted him at pick 35. But if you ask Tim Murray and their scouting staff they said they had a 1st round Grade on the player. Regardless of the fact, we are going to get a really good hockey player with pick 32 of the SECOND round. One who may have been drafted in the first round if it were any other year. Just like how Svechnikov and Zadina would have been drafted before Hischer and Patrick last season if they were born a year earlier. |

By this logic, then 2nd round talent is in the first round.
You can't have 1st round talent in the second round unless lower round talent is in the first round
Unless every pick is basically a first, which I have heard rumors of - jcragcrumple
By this logic yea the 2nd round talent in this draft very well could have been drafted in the 1st round last year if they were born a year earlier. It’s a testament of the draft as a whole. Why do you think it was so damn hard to get a first rounder for Kane this past deadline ? |

Just messing around, but it's a silly premise with a silly argument is my point. 1 player gets drafted at 1 spot at 1 time. Period. End of sentence. And the premise that team x with the first pick in the 2nd round (pick 32 this year, Buffalo) is getting a first round talent is all subjective, as teams with picks 20-31 didn't deem him to be a first rounder, or at least better then the first round player they picked. Also a little wink wink potshot at Buffalo's expense right now, but really any team that is last at any year: The teams picking 20-31 are usually better and have drafted better then teams picking 32. I'd be more inclined to bet they didn't think player x was good enough for the first round, and because of their track record of being a winning franchise side with their prediction more often. That said, anything can happen with any prospect. |

Would you say Dahlin is a better prospect then Hischier ? So why is it not fair to say that someone drafted with pick 32 would heresay not have more talent then someone drafted late in the FIRST round last season ? This crop of 2000’ birthdays is much better then the crop of 99’s drafted last year. |

But that's not what Gerbe was getting at, which you brought up. He claimed that pick 32 of the 2018 draft was basically a first round pick.. in 2018. You're moving the goal post. |

pulling strings
if you are drafting at pick 25, you really like a guy that is rated 35, better then the others
you reach and pick him
at pick 32, the mindset should be to take the best player that was falling on day 1 of the draft |

come on leaf fans
if there are 31 picks in the first rd, you are picking 32
you are still picking in the second rd
yes 99 times out of a 100 you are going to get a player with a late first rd grade
but that is not taking into account
1. is it a deep draft
2. is it a weak draft class
3. is this player that fell to pick 32 a true late rd first draft grade in a normal draft

Just like their are star players and role players on a team, there are scouts that are better than others. Why Tolvanen fell all the way to the Preds last year is anyone’s guess. I personally thought he’d go top 15. Different people have different opinions on perceived player values at certain points in the draft. |

31 players will have 1st-round grades. The 32nd player will have a 2nd round grade.
If there is a player that is projected to go in round 2 that gets drafted in round 1, then that pick is "basically an early 2nd" even though he was taken in round 1. Either the draft order stays the same as projected (it won't), or some players from lower rounds will be taken in the first.
Whether the talent pool is deeper doesn't change the fact that your pick in the second round is decided by the picks above you. And that player is deemed by all 31 clubs to be a second-round talent |

Yep, agreed. My point is at pick 32, like homie said, 99/100 you are probably getting a player that is a first round grade according to YOU. The teams in front of you disagreed and took the guys they had first round grades on. Either way, this draft is a major mix from 20-40. So some teams might have guy 20 at their 35 ranked spot and vice versa. It's all subjective. |

Yea well I can’t defend his comment about that. It’s a second round pick. But what I can say is that we will be getting a good player at pick 32. One that scouts may have percived as a first round “talent”. That’s why many teams in the top 10 are looking to trade back. Becuase if they pick up an extra 2nd rounder which has more perceived “value” then a 2nd rounder in prior years they can select someone a few picks later that they would have selected at their very own pick regardless. |

Yes but that player can’t be subjected to be a 2nd round player due to the virtue of there only being 31 teams in th league. Last years draft there might have only been 15 1st round talents but there were 31 players selected in the first round. Last years draft was a joke.

So I'm planning the Sabres parade for next summer. Do you guys have any big ideas that you'd like to see? Floats, like a giant Sabretooth, dancers, maybe some choreographed sword fights? ROR carrying Eichel's jockstrap?
We're going from last to first this year, because Dahlin, obviously; so I wanna get ahead of this...
