I actually considered staying at 19 and going off the board after Berggren, but decided I wanted to nab a center (Berggren has played center, but is primarily a winger). I know that centers and wingers often get converted in the NHL, but I feel that center, outside of Frost (who may actually be a better fit as a winger at the pro ranks), is the organization's biggest prospect need right now. Rubstov has been a bit underwhelming, at least offensively, at the North American game, and the second-best option is probably Vorobyov. That leaves a bit of a hole after Couturier and Patrick. I don't see Laughton ever being a permanent 3C option, which makes the internal option a tough one currently.
I know it's a but of a pricey move, but I wanted to make sure I was able to grab a center, Kupari in this case. He was a bit sheltered in his usage at the higher Finnish levels, but adapted to his role and played it well. Also, has some fantastic hands and a nice shot.
Again, if I couldn't be guaranteed to get him, I probably wouldn't make the trade.
Edit: Plus, he's Finnish, which means he may be into black metal. That is a bonus to this GM. - jmatchett383
No thanks. Iād stay at 19 or move down |

Need to get more than a first round pick for Simmonds. Why would a team like Arizona who is an up and coming team similar to the Flyers be willing to give up a first round pick AND a quality young NHL player that it would take to get Simmonds? - MJL
Because they aren't like the Flyers. They have been drafting and trying to build for years now. What core pieces do they have that you see and think can lead them. They just resigned Ekman- Larson. You need some veteran presence to help push this team forward. Simmonds gives them a winning type player that can help now and if they resign him for more years down the road.
Now everything is about sitting and waiting for picks to develop. |

What about this. I know it might look bad but hear me out.
To Edmonton: Simmonds and Vecchione
To Philadelphia: 10 and Lucic
Yes Lucic has 5 more years at 6 million but basically it's like resigning Simmonds in a way. You also still have a big body, physical presence and probably a super motivated player after a down year. Edmonton wants to move him to free up space. They also get a solid player in Simmonds to replace Lucic and a bottom 6 guy in Vecchione. The price is the 10th pick for the Flyers to take on the Lucic deal.
Now Flyers pick at 10, 14 and 19. That's plenty of ammo to move up, stay and take best player available or even get a youngish NHL vet. You could even trade back and get even more assets like early 2nd round picks.
Does it work or is the Lucic deal just too bad to want to play with. For me I don't see it as that bad as i think that is where Simmonds will end up resigning around. - J35Bacher
Honestly, getting 10th overall for Simmonds with only a year left on his deal, who we might not re-sign anyway... I don't hate it.
Lucic I'm not a huge fan of but he's easily an upgrade over quite a few of our guys imo. |

There are other methods of acquiring some veteran presence than giving up a first round pick and the plus that it would take to get Simmonds. I'm stating that with the assumption that Arizona would not give up a lottery pick for Simmonds.

Lucic has 5 more years at 6 million. Kind of where I see Simmonds next deal going. Then i have a top 6 like this:
Giroux - Couturier - Konecny
Lucic - Patrick - Voracek

However he's not an upgrade over Simmonds.
weren't you in favor of not re-signing Simmonds due to the risk involved if I'm not mistaken? Now you're okay with taking on Lucic who has 5 more seasons at 6M cap hit?

I would bury Weise in the minors next year. Maybe he asks for his release but I use that savings to have a guy like Aube-Kabel with the Flyers.
Lucic can play in the top 9 if you prefer Lindblom playing with Patrick. |

I don't think you can move MacDonald. I don't want Gudas being our veteran guy we rely on when one of the youngsters struggles. MacDonald can be a solid guy for this team.
MacDonald seemed to be a guy that would play with one of the youngsters when needed to get them comfortable. |

Lucic coming to Philly would give him another city to play the "Do you know who I am?" card with local authorities. |

Why does there have to be a plus? - J35Bacher
I'm posting my take on it with the understanding that Arizona is not going to give up the 5th pick for Simmonds alone. So with that being said, a later or future non lottery pick for Simmonds is not enough in my opinion.
