I was told we could sign Skinner for free so why does that not hold true for any free agent?
Why didn’t we sign Mike Richards? He was a UFA and free? - ImThatGuy
Not sure why you're going off on this one so hard though...i have heard the "Why not wait til he hits FA in a few months" a couple hundred times over the years on here.
What I comprehended from his post was...
Why spend a highly valued asset on a guy who could be available next year without costing said asset.
Now, if Skinner is a one of a kind player, then it changes the value since you then have a year to try to get a deal done without any, competition....that is worth something.
If you believe there are other similar players to Skinner, then he is less valuable to use ROR on.
I get that logic in spades.
He doesn't excite me that much...I would expect to get more for FOR.
Whatever though, people value players differently.
Many players choose to stay where they are for a number of reasons...obviously you can't depend on someone going to FA...but it does happen...less and less though I will admit that as teams try to lock up their guys...hence the trade route.

I honestly think that is the best angle for JB to pursue. The Habs are DESPERATE for a center and their fan base/price/weber can't wait around to develop one. ROR can play top line minutes. He is head and shoulders better than any other center on the market right now.
Put the screws too um JB! - feetontheair22
That’s what I’m saying make them pay or will just move him to a different team

Stamkos technically never hit UFA status. He got to the "courting period" but that deal was signed before Tampa would have officially lost his rights. - buffalofan19
Well, call it what you want, fact is he heard directly from sverals teams on their proposal.
So he was in the FA process. He did not withdraw prior to hearing from other teams.

I think the trade happens. I think they squeeze ROR & McCabe out of us for 3rd overall....but I think it could legitimately happen.
I know this trade would leave us a bit bare at 2C...but we start the the year giving Mitts the chance to earn it. Erod holds down 3C. And who cares takes 4C

Nooooo thanks. I am not doubting his ability at all. He's a hell of a goal-scorer. But he doesn't fit the rebuild timeline. - feetontheair22
Leadership, plays the right way, can skate and score. I'd take him for the cost of a guy who may get sent down to the ECHL unless he pickes it up fast. (Lol, couldnt resist).
If he wants an excessive contract, trade him at the TD?

Is this gonna win us a cup? No. But it is a roster with a lot of talent that will be together for a long time. - feetontheair22
That's really not much a of squeeze. McCabe is expendable and people here put him or #32 in every deal because of that. Squeezing would mean someone like Guhle, who I would really hate to give up. End of the day, I think Montreal just takes Kotkaniemi at #3.
