Cap hit Is based on games played not cash flow. An acquiring team of O'Reilly would only have to pay him his $1,000,000 salary for 2018/2019 but would be on the hook for the full 7.5m cap hit. That's why players acquired at the deadline are only a cap hit of games remaining/82 * total cap hit for the acquiring team.

I dont think that if we pay the bonus that it also means we have that cap hit (even if we trade him).

I think if he is traded before the start of the season, the other team gets the full $7.5 cap hit. If after season starts, it is split of course depending on games played.

After thinking about that Sportsnet article, I think Botterill would trade O'Reilly for 2019 picks. I can see how having 3 first round picks would appeal to him. It does nothing for me, and I think it's the wrong move, but I think he would. I can't believe he doesn't feel any pressure to win now.

3 first round picks doesn't help us for years. I get the argument against "rushing the rebuild," but he should be looking for hockey trades imo. A pick in the range of 13-18 next year would just be awful for my enthusiasm for this team, and I'm sure others.

The feelings of the fans is not his problem, and I get that. Basically this all comes down to Murray squandering everything he was given. So (frank) that guy for leaving us - incredibly, somehow - in a worse position than when he began.
