The Flyers should not sign Simmonds to anything longer than 4 years imo. Even if it jacks up the AAV.

If he wants 5 or 6 you trade him at the deadline or the draft.

The team cant be giving out long term deals to players in their 30's.

I would however, sign him to the 3 years 7 million in a heartbeat.

Term is a way bigger worry to me than cap hit where Simmonds is concerned.

I 100% agree with you but I feel like he's most definitely going to want more than 3-4 years.

Not if you're signing Simmonds to longer term
- ajw12

I can see that. It still would seem a little messed up to me though, considering the bargain he's been.

Wow, if someone is willing to offer Stastny 7 aav, I say more power to them. I just hope its not the flyers.
- MBFlyerfan

7m AAV is basically what Stastny is making now.

If you sign Stastny for that cap hit, I feel like you have to at least match that for Simmonds.
- Ftown19125

There's cap space to do both, if Hextall wants to. Simmonds extension won't start till 19-20.

Why? They would still be nowhere near the cap ceiling.
- Feanor

I'd rather put that money into resigning Simmonds.

Damn salary cap!

Edit: I haven't checked the cap, but Stastny's 3rd year would coincide with the raises for Provorov, Konecny, Patrick, and , to a probably lesser extent, Sanheim and Myers. Not sure if you could carry both Simmonds and Stastny at around $7M and still be able to resign all of those RFAs.

Simmonds is going to want 6 years. Why would he accept anything less than that at this point in his career?

7m AAV is what you're going to need to offer at the least to be able to get him to sign a 2-3 year deal if he's getting longer offers elsewhere

Unpopular opinion, if it needs to be one deal over the other (Stastny, Simmonds); I’m going Statsny. He costs nothing but salary cap (and Simmonds brings us assets back), which we have plenty of and fills a huge hole for us (imo). If you throw Statsny 6-7M for a short deal and Simmonds expects the same for 5-6 years, bye bye Simmonds. Rip all you want. Simmonds absolutely deserves a raise and a new contract but we need to do what improves the team in the best way.

Agreed.

I was further pointing out that it wasn't like Stastny would be getting a raise after being offered 7m AAV. It is literally what he makes today.

You can do both, though. That's the luxury afforded by having Ghost and Couturier locked up well below market value, and no expensive goalie.

Furthermore, Stastny drives play and is good on faceoffs.

Bill wrote earlier this month that he wouldn't be surprised to see the Simmonds negotiations lag until the season begins. I think that's partly due to not really knowing how Simmonds recovers from multiple injuries.

It could be a great move for Hextall to sign Sanheim to a 2 or 3 year deal in July. He won't sign for minimum wage like Morin did, but you could get him at a discount before his third season begins.

Holmgren did that with Couturier on 7/20/13.

Don’t want Stastny.

He played with Laine and Ehlers for most of his time in Winnipeg.

He’s lost a step already, and those two helped mask it.

Risk of LeCavalier version two. Club needs to get faster, not go the other way.

That's true, which is why I think 3 years is a fair offer.

Of course in his contract year he managed to play 82 games, and I'm sure his agent will focus on that in negotiations.

While they aren’t Ehlers and Laine, we still have TK, Jake, Giroux and (maybe Simmonds) or 1 of Weal, Lindblom to play with Statsny to help mask whatever (if needed). He’ll have good line mates here too basically.

Some bridge contracts are signed before the ELC is over. That is what I am advocating Hextall does with Sanheim.

Stastny basically became a net front guy for the Jets. Down low kind of player.

It was Ehlers and Laine carrying the play imho. He played well in the playoffs but I’m a little weary. 2 year deal? Sure. Blow the cap space.

In St Louis his main wingers were Steen, Sobotka and Tarasenko.

Interestingly, his 5 on 5 p/60 was slightly higher than Schenn's.

Yeah I’d be comfy with a 2 year high cap, 3 is where I get slightly mehhh. But if we trade Simmonds, Statsny becomes his net presence on PP1 (if Patrick isn’t) and if we sign Statsny and keep Simmonds, we have Simmonds PP1, Statsny net front presence on PP2 with Patrick as the main puck distributor. Dare I say two competent PP units?
