It’s not pretty, but in this new era - have to wait for those kids to develop.

Yeah I’d be comfy with a 2 year high cap, 3 is where I get slightly mehhh. But if we trade Simmonds, Statsny becomes his net presence on PP1 (if Patrick isn’t) and if we sign Statsny and keep Simmonds, we have Simmonds PP1, Statsny net front presence on PP2 with Patrick as the main puck distributor. Dare I say two competent PP units?

I would explore a Simmonds trade but realistically I think Hextall keeps him. Intangibles and all.

Long term reader, but I don’t post much. I was able to go to the development camp this year, which was a treat considering that I live 11 hours away. I figured I’d share some things that I noticed.

Goalies: It was great to be able to see Hart and Sandstrom. Most of the practice was simple tracking drills, so there wasn’t much to evaluate. Hart’s movements were quick, precise, and efficient.

Defense: The 2 standouts were Myers and Friedman. It was obvious that they had a year of pro hockey under their belt. Myers’ skater was exactly as described, really good for his size. His edgework wasn’t flawless, but he always had his balance and made agile cuts and turns for a frame that large.

I was most impressed with Friedman though. He clearly was the most polished player. He was clearly the best skater and everything he did was crisp, precise, and efficient. Bill has spoken of him being a dark horse to make the Flyers at some point and I obviously saw why.

Wylie’s skating stood out to me on several occasions. It seemed like he had good acceleration and edgework. Ginning I tried to pay attention to with Puck drills. It seemed to me that he felt comfortable with handling the puck. He definitely isn’t doing anything fancy with it, but he never mishandled it. I did however notice his passing was shaky. The accuracy was there, but the puck wouldn’t remain flat on the ice and was hard for others to receive cleanly.

Forwards: This was a treat to watch some of these kids. The clear standout was Frost. Everything he did was calm and controlled. His skating was effortlessly efficient through all the drills. With puck drills, it was the same thing. He always had the puck exactly where he wanted it. He clearly was paying attention to the basics through all the relatively simple drills. Watching him stickhandle was fun at the end of the practice.

Farabee and O’Brien seemed like they were maybe a bit nervous. The talent is definitely there for both of them though. I saw separate times where each of them followed up with a coach to ask questions/get pointers. They both seemed hungry to learn. I’m definitely excited to see them develop, because it was apparent that the skill level is there.

Ratcliffe, Twarynski, and Strome are all big guys. The first two had noticeably heavy shots with decent accuracy. Strome I have to say stood out as a bit deficient in a lot of areas. Maybe it was just an off day for him, but his edgework was shaky, he seemed to cut corners on drills, and I expected more from his shot. When everyone was just shooting around at the end and he was just goofing off is when I noticed him being more comfortable out there and picking corners when shooting.

Obviously I’m no scout and this was a very limited viewing, but wanted to share these things. I really wish my vacation lasted long enough to see the 3v3 tournament.

Some bridge contracts are signed before the ELC is over. That is what I am advocating Hextall does with Sanheim.

nah I'd rather just go 6-8 at low AAV...gives them a longer window to win before needing to hold the team togehter

I thought Friedman was pretty impressive in preseason last year too.

I would trade Gudas for...well, anything better than a 4th would be great. Then I'd go after a vet, maybe Folin or Sustr, and have them play on the 3rd pair. Would also try to upgrade Neuvirth.

See ya, Flip. Thanks for Sushko and Kalynuk.

3 x $7m would be a good deal for Stastny. The Flyers can easily afford that kind of cap hit, and he'd only be 35 when it expired.

- Feanor

The question I have is if Stastny can get a 5 year deal for a 6M AAV, from another team, why would he sign that deal with the Flyers?

Someone brought up a great point about the Pens trade. Sheary and Hunwick for a 4th. How does the NHL approve that? I don't think that would have gone through in a video game.

Strome looked that way last season he definitely has a skating issue that they are trying to correct and he also seemed to slack on some drills.

One of my best memories were Sanheim and Morin last year making errors and having the coaches rerun the drill until they got it right.

I've been reading some of Sammy's quotes from development camp and he seems like a tough guy to impress. I'm sure his son has that fire to continually improve. Seems like the perfect guy to have running the show. They have to earn it.

But Samuelsson was reluctant to say Myers is NHL-ready.

“If he had played a whole year," Samuelsson said, "maybe he would be close. But he was hurt a lot, so I think he needs more time in the minors."

“We have changed the camp a little bit too,” Samuelsson said. “There’s always new things he can pick up. I honestly think he can learn a lot still. You never stop learning in hockey. I think [Friedman] can learn a lot still and he has a lot to learn just to become a pro.”

“They can’t get fully developed physically in one summer,” Flyers director of player development Kjell Samuelsson said. “That’s impossible, but they believe that. They go after it and then realize when next season starts, it’s going to take a long time.”

I thought a 4th rounder was a little low. No? Hunwick may have driven it down a little, granted.

Stastny (since I don't think they have much shot at JVR) and possibly a bottom six winger. Starting to think they don't sign a D, but we will see.
- bmeltzer

Don't really see the need to sign a Dman if they aren't moving anyone out. You already have Provy, Ghost, AMac, Sanheim, Gudas, and Hagg as your likely top 6 with Myers knocking on the door and Morin probably ready to go by mid season. Maybe they sign an NHL/AHL tweener who can serve as a 7th if they want Myers to get a little more time in at LHV, but that's all I expect them to do.

Wow, if someone is willing to offer Stastny 7 aav, I say more power to them. I just hope its not the flyers.
- MBFlyerfan

Yeah, that's a bit much for a 3C who likely won't break 45-50 points max. I don't think anyone offers him that much or much more than 3 years. I'm guessing 3 years and 5.5 per probably gets a deal done.

The other possibility I could see since they have the room, is to offer him a huge one year deal, say 8 million. That way, he could still sign another under 35 deal after next season. Would make sense for both sides.

I’ve also seen the name Riley Nash thrown around. My one fear, and maybe someone who knows a bit more about him can shed some light - but where the hell was this guy before this season?

He’s not young and is this a one year wonder kind of deal?

I'd be pretty surprised if anyone is giving Stastny, who is clearly on the downside of his career, 5 years and 30 million. Best I can see, is maybe someone offers either 4 years at 25 or 5 at 27.5. This is why I'd try to reel him in with a huge one year offer. I originally thought 8 million, but I'd even go to 9.5 million since they have ample room. I'd sell it to him and his agent as it would give him the opportunity to sign another under 35 contract after the season.

Even if he just plays 70 games and puts up 40-45 points in 18-19, he'd still likely be able to get at least 3 years and 15 million, or 4 years and 17.5 from someone. Add that to the 9.5 the Flyers could pay him in 18-19, and he's looking at 24.5 million for 4 years or 27 for 5.

The only way it puts Simmonds in the 8m stratosphere is if you're only giving him 2-3 years.
- ajw12

i can see the points but Simmonds is not a center supply and demand have an impact to some degree and term would be different.
