Very well-written
It's so hard to tell with elite athletes. They don't always think like regular people
But yeah. I think, more likely than not, he's in the wind |

One source cited: “Just my opinion, but I think it’s likely he’s going. If by tonight at 6-8 no decision we’re done. Best thing then would be we trade him for a pittance to a team that wants to give him 8 years.”
- B.D. Gallof
This is incorrect.
Only the Islanders can offer him 8 years. |

If you look at the youth in our system along with the pieces still needed not just to make the playoffs but to seriously advance, we are years away. JT knows this. He is a better fit with San Jose to win right now. If he leaves, its a kick in the crotch for all Isles fans, but as we know after a little time, the feeling goes away and your back to normal. WHOEVER signs JT for 7 or 8 years will be regretting it after 3 years. If we don't allocate that money to JT, we now have respected management that WILL fill in the teams needs, but again we need to be patient. Our future is brighter than its been in decades. If a few of these picks pan out we will be a dominant force in 2 years. Maybe Sorokin comes over next season? |

I was under the impression the Isles could deal him to, let's say, the Leafs today, and they could then sign him for 8 years? |

No.
To offer a guy 8 years, he had to have been on a team's roster at the trade deadline.

If JT is a casualty due to Lou and trotz so be it. This teams was never going to win with snow. Clutterbuck, Ladd, Cizikas, all where trrrible signings. Boychuk I'm ok with, signing Bailey before Tavares was horrible he will be a 35-40pt player w/o JT. |

This is definitely still possible. If the Isles would be willing to make a deal last minute. |

The only way another team can get an 8 year deal for JT is if the Islanders do a sign and trade. Otherwise they can only offer a 7yr deal. |

could team offer a 7 year deal with a player only option an extra year? or a 7 year deal with a signing bonus equal to an eighth year? |

As a long suffering Ranger fan I feel for you guys. You had the Millbury era and then Snow and now JT might leave. You have some good young players but you arent going to win now and the team will be moving. As we have seen with these 8 yr deals, they are cap killers. It might not seem so right now but 5 or 6 yrs from now that 11 mil per yr cap hit might not look so good. I felt the same when they traded Mcd. Better to invest the money else where. |

No. Signing bonuses count as cap. It would essentially be adding more cap to each year. |

Not being a douchebag ranger fan here. I honestly think that if he leaves, it could be a blessing in disguise for the Islanders. As a ranger fan, I’ve seen these contracts hamper them long term (since the cap). Granted, the players I’m talking about (Gomez, Richards, Drury, and on and on) are not John Tavares but still. He’s 28 and a helluva player. But he never struck me as the kind of player who will have longevity at his best. And I don’t think this team is close to winning a cup. I think with Lou there now, it could be a total fresh start for the organization. A lot of good young players there with a very solid 2018 draft to boot. I think Snow should’ve given him an ultimatum. Sign or we trade you. I think that’s the unfortunate part of this. Look, he can still stay obviously so everything I just said is moot. |

Agree with Blueshirts. Could be a blessing in disguise.
Reminds me of Parise a few years ago. At the time we lost him, it was devastating and took several years to get back on track. However in the long run we are better without him. Plus we don’t have to pay out that monster contract that can’t be lived up to. |

Either way, the Isles should be the first call Tavares makes. |

Parise was a nice player but he is not on the same level is Tavares. The deal for another team will be 7yrs, so Tavares will still only be 34yrs ld when that contract is done.
There is ZERO blessing in disguise with Tavares leaving the Islanders for their fans. |

JT could sign a one year deal (risky), say w/ Toronto, and then sign an 8 year deal next year. |
