You're right - Tavares did take a hometown discount because he wanted to win here.

Signing bonuses are paid July 1st, correct? He became a much richer man today, his investment advisor can easily get a 20% return on fairly conservative investments right now, maybe much more if he's willing to take a few risks. He knew what he was doing.

20% is high for a conservative investment but i get what you're saying he's not gonna have to worry about money for a while. If they can get the other guys signed before the next lockout they can probably get pretty creative in order to keep the cap hits relatively low.
